I noticed the pathway readers in the free curriculum guide for beginning reading and was wondering if anyone has experience using them successfully or not. If not, what do you use for readers? My dd 8 (will be 9 in fall) is picking up fluency very well this year, but I’m not sure she would be ready for dictation and grammar and such by the fall. How are the pathway readers listed on this sight used? Are they reading practice for the delightful reading program? Do you need the whole kit or just the three readers that are listed? Any info would be great. Thanks!!!

We have used the readers only for reading practice, and my dd likes them. She is nearly done with the third of the 2nd grade level books, which is essentially like a chapter book. I don’t think they are particularly meant to be coordinated with the DR program, they are just good practice reading for a developing reader, IMO. At least, that’s how I’ve used them.

We have loved the Pathway readers – my kids love the stories in them. We have the whole set and my oldest is on the last couple. I have always just had him read a story aloud to me each day, nothing fancy. Now he reads his stories aloud to his younger brothers, because they love listening. That’s it for us 🙂

We love the pathway readers. They are such great stories that address character traits usually. My daughter is 7 and we are up to the third grade book. I was having her read one chapter aloud each day. I’ve decided to slow down and do one a week. The book we are on is about habits. So she is reading one chapter a week and then we are practicing that habit for the week. Great series, highly recommend them.

We are just using them for reading practice, no workbook.  My ds loves them!

Okay so the kit and workbooks are not necessary just the actual readers? I am just needing a lot of practice reading for her. Thanks for the response!

we use the grade 1 books, and have the grade 2 books … but usually my boys don’t need them much past the first book in grade 2.

i have them read a story aloud to me a few times a week, then narrate. no workbooks. and i don’t think they “go” with Delightful Reading, i think they’re just a suggestion for phonics help. they’ve been on the guide since way before DR came along.

Thanks for all the info. I was a little confused when I looked them up and saw all the teachers manuals and such. I think I’ll just stick to the readers.

We are using them, too. We have the set from First Step till the 3rd 2nd Grade book with workbooks. Up till now we were really happy with the books but just today my DD 8 told me she hates reading! She is a very good reader, likes to read the bible story of day etc. but she does not do any leisure reading. So far all she enjoyed was the PW readers now she doesn’t even want to read those anymore :(. She said it is too much to read. We are on the 2nd 2nd Grade book and I have her read a chapter a day since she doesn’t do any other pleasure/leisure reading. I am afraid if I allow her to read just half the chapter she will loose her good reading reading skills and just gives up on enjoying books at all? What do you think?

Christine, I would just have her read 1/2 chapter everyday, I don’t think she’ll lose her good reading skills.  I would also consider allowing her to read them to herself and just narrate what she read to me.

She actually likes reading out loud better. I have her read to herself right now (so I can read with little brother)but she likes it better if she can read to someone. Did anyone go through the same, a child fighting reading, and did it pass? I pray it is just one of those “phases”!
