We have ipads and want to kid-proof them a bit more or differently than the parental control features allow. I was wondering if anyone has used either Mobichip or X3Watch or others and what your opinion is. Right now we’ve blocked youtube and safari via the parental controls, but this is too limiting.
Any service that requires installing software on the computer to operate won’t work with iOS devices. There is no way to install software on iOS that filters at an operating system level. I’ve heard there are some alternative browser apps with protection that you could use while keeping Safari locked out, though. The other thing you could do is have some sort of filtering on your home internet connection. That would depend on what your ISP or your router hardware is capable of. It aslo doesn’t help if you use your devices outside of your home.
Christie, did you end up getting mobicip for your ipad? Have you found anything that works well? My 16yo ds just won an ipad and we want to get a filtering device on it for him. Does anybody have a recommendation? We currently have Safe Eyes on the other 2 computers in the house but not sure how it would work on an ipad. Doug, any other suggestions? Thanks. Heather
You could use something like OpenDNS (or others) where you tweak the settings on your Internet router and it helps protect all of the devices in your home. http://www.opendns.com/parental-controls/
I did get mobichip, but we don’t really use it. At this time my kids just don’t go online without us. I will need to try it out more soon and report back. We have an app called Weet Woo which is a nice safe way for young ones to use you tube.
