I must have gotten bad copies of these 2 books…  There is “1 chapter,” and then it just goes on and on and on with no breaking points to the end.  All the parables are just pushed together.  I am assuming each ends with a Scripture verse?  There are spelling mistakes, and I’m not sure but there may be other languages mixed in?  But that could be thrown in with the parables, I have no way of knowing.  There are no pictures at all.  I guess these are reprints, but obvious extremely poor quality.  I think they also have the author wrong.  Aren’t these written by MRS. Alfred Gatty?  Needless to say, I am more than a little disappointed with them.

The publisher is General Books (www.General-Books.net).  Anyone know if I should get new ones or if I’ll still be able to use them?  Of course I ordered them a month ago, threw out the slip because it looked like how they described, and deleted the emails about them.  Undecided  So I doubt I could possibly return them.

I’d never seen this book.  But I checked out the copy that I got from Yesterday’s Classics on my kindle app (free from amazon).  None of the probs you mention.  There are a few pictures…one every so often…they are in black and white.

HTH, oh and yes Gatty is the author.

Thanks, Joanna.  I think I will have to get a new version if yours has pics.  Grrrrr……  Warning to others getting their books from that publisher….  Frown

Just to be clear, the author is Mrs. Alfred Gatty, not Alfred Gatty, right?  On my books, it says the author is Alfred Gatty.

Mine says by Margaret S. Gatty.  There are not tons of pics.  But they are nice ones.

Just to let others know, I have contacted both the seller (who was evidently supposed to warn users of these problems) and the publisher.  The publisher’s FAQs state that booksellers are to warn of numerous typos, lack of illustrations, missing text, and other highly unacceptable problems with their books.  I can’t imagine a seller warning of these things – no one would buy their books!  I certainly wouldn’t have.  And I said as much.  They let you read the books online for free once you have purchased their cruddy, unedited paperback.  I wanted to know why a person would buy an unreadable book to place it on their shelf just so they can read it online!

Anyway, if I get a reply, I’ll let you know what they say.  For now, I will steer clear of anything published by General-Books.net…..

I have been reading Catherine Levison’s book “A Charlotte Mason Education,” and in the chapter on Nature Study, she mentions “Parables from Nature.” I don’t recall the exact wording, but she did say that there are various editions which sometimes state the author’s name as Mrs. Alfred Gatty, Margaret S. Gatty, and so on. It’s too bad you paid for such an inferior printing of the book….so frustrating when that kind of thing happens!

Thanks, sue_mom.  Unfortunately for me, I found another book with the same types of errors – Secrets of the Woods by William Long.  Grrrrrrr………  And that one I cannot figure out where I might have purchased it from.  My emails are evidently no longer in my email.  Ach!  Since they are “new,” with shipping, these books were around $10 each!

I recently heard that there are 2 versions of the Parables book and to watchout for this. I wish I could remember where i read it. I think there needs to be a “warning” somewhere on here such as at the Bookfinder/Organizer place where Sonya has the book and for other “old” editions where someone has had a problem. Maybe mention on the website somewhere obvious to let Sonya know if there are problems such as this, so she can post it in her Bookfinder or maybe someone else might have some other ideas?
