I’ve used the CM Organizer on and off for a couple of years, and I keep getting drawn back to the simplicity of it. What I can’t seem to get past is the lack of a monthly calendar to look ahead for my appointments and our assignments, sort of like what to expect from our week. I would like to use only one thing, not a paper planner and the CM Organizer. Does anyone do just that, use the CM Organizer for everything, personal and school; or do all of you who use the CM Organizer keep two planners? Any suggestions?
I use the Organizer to keep track of what we’ve done, etc. I also use the calendar/planner things that are downloadable that SCM added to the Planning Your CM Education. That can be used to plug in all your plans for the week (on which day to do what), then you can easily go back and change/add anything for the coming week that may alter what you have planned for any given day. I may add or subtract a certain activity my kids do if we’re on break from it and add in a different subject since we’ll be home. I print that and put it on my fridge, that way everyone knows what we are doing for the week ahead. Most of the time nothing changes, but if I have a dental appt. on Wed, then what I normally have planned may have to be tweaked.
I used to use a Word doc that I had created/saved that I could go in at the end/beginning of the week (when I had a good idea of what the next week might hold) and make very quick changes, print, and put on the fridge. Instead of printing out the daily plans from the Organizer, my kids use this one “weekly” plan to mark off things they’ve accomplished for the day. Of course it’s not detailed, but I don’t need that since I have more details in the Organizer or may make notes in the note box provided.
I also use a reg. calendar the is “home base”. After looking over that calendar then I use the one that I have saved (from SCM) to update our weekly plan. This may sound confusing, but with everything in it’s place it only takes a few minutes.
I used the organizer last year for all my schooling information.
This year, I am using a “curriculum” that has a list of things to do each week, so I have to co-ordinate that with the organizer, which is trickier. However, 2 years ago when I did AO, I had to do that, so I know what to do… but it is trickier as I said. What I basically do, is setup a “resource” for me for things like “mid term, end of term”… and assign them to specific dates. When they come up, I evaluate where we are on all the subjects compared to where we were “supposed” to be, and then modify my schedule if needed…. so if we are ahead on science but behind in history, then I will take one of our “science” times and switch it to history for the rest of the term…. or I just re-evaluate where we are going to be at the end of the term, etc…
I use google calendar to track appointments, lessons, etc.
Google calendar. I never thought of that. Can you use that on your iPhone? I don’t have a laptop, so when I want to record something, it might be nice to do it there.
Hmm… that’s actually a really good idea. I can use the CMO with my iPhone. Not ideal, obviously, but doable. I’ve yet to make the jump to Google Calendar, but dh wants me to so he can “see” our activities and appointments as well. Thanks for the suggestions.
Another great family calendar app is the Cozi Calendar. It is web based and has apps for the iPhone and iPad. My husband can see what’s going on and I can send him reminders. It even does “to do” and grocery lists 🙂
The Cozi Calendar looks great. I tried to download the app for my iPad and but it is only available in the US App store, not in the Australian App Store.
Can anyone recommend something similar to co-ordinate calendars, schedules, appointments, shopping lists etc like Cozi does?
Hi Cindie! I am not using the CM organizer at the moment. But I am looking to use it again when we start our next school year. We recently made a long distance move to a temporary location while we wait for our house in KS to sell. It has been a chaotic year to say the least. We are using a pre-planned curriculum for this season.
Thanks, Heather. I am glad the pre-planned is working for you. Whenever I try one, I always end up having to shelve it because I tweak too much. Hoping next year isn’t so chaotic.
For me I used the CM planner for 2 years and loved it. Thought this year I would try doing it myself to save money. I would say it did not save me money OR time. I hate what I am using but I made a commitment to it and will finish the school year on it. Next year though I am so back to the planner here. I miss it and the simplicity of it so much. I use it only for school.
I keep our personal life, church, activities etc on just a monthly desk calendar. My dh doesn’t need to look through all the school stuff to see what he needs to see. So this works for us.
As far as chores – I just have a one sheet list with what everyone does on each day. We hang it on the fridge. This is simple and easy and doesn’t add to the paper printing daily.
I wish I had one of those handy dandy phones or even high speed internet cause I would use Google calendar for our home stuff otherwise. It’s free, you can look at it from a month view, day, week, etc. You can color code things and I don’t know the ins and outs of it but you can see other calendars also. So you could look into that all you have to do is sign up for a gmail account (also free). It’s simple and nice. My computer man told me about it and his family uses it.
Just thought I’d share. Calendars are so hard, cause we all want different things and life is so varied from home to home. Good luck Misty
