I know it seems like this question has been answered on previous posts, but I just want to make sure I’m understanding it correctly.  I am able to borrow Oxford First Ancient History from my library(if it’s not on hold), so could I buy The Greeks and The Romans by Roy Burrell online, then just use the first part from Oxford First Ancient History from the library?  I think I saw previous posts saying those two books of his are the same as the 2nd and 3rd part of Oxford.

I am also confused about how many posts mention other history texts(TQ, BF, , STOW, MOH, and other abbreivations I don’t know:)  Are the SCM module history books not enough?  (I mean no disrespect to the contributors/authors of SCM).  I just want to make sure I’m understanding the history modules before we dive in, thanks!

    My understanding…

    BF – Beautiful Feet

SOTW – Story of the World

    MOH – Mystery of History

I cannot say about the Burrell books as I have the one that includes all 3, but I can say that the SCM module history books are enough and in some cases more than enough! There are many ways and books you can use and you’ll be fine as long as you don’t try to use them all. LOL. Personally, I’ve chosen SCM modules as the framework for our curriculum and I do buy all of my books. I only make a substitution when something isn’t working or I can’t find a title for a reasonable price, which has only happened once or twice. I feel confident that the bases are well covered and can easily find a different book, if need be. This came after a year or so second guessing myself and feeling like we were treading water b/c of my indecision. The Lord revealed to me the need to simplify and trust Him to honor that obedience. SCM has been wonderful b/c I need a helping hand putting it all together and with 4 kids all 3 years apart, it was EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to me that we do as much as possible together.

TQ is Truthquest history.  There are samples on their website.  They are wonderful guides that take you chronologically through a time period, with booklists and suggested age ranges, and also with some discussion points/commentary along the way.  You definitely do not need them, as SCM is enough.

I like them because our kids read a lot, and it helps me make some extra selections; also because we have eight children twelve and under, which sometimes necessitates the oldest working fairly independently – I can have them read through the discussion points in the guide that relates to the area of study if I am simply not available to discuss at that time.

I would warn that Truthquest can be overwhelming for some – if you can’t handle a booklist with a lot of choices, it’s likely not for you.  A friend of mine tried to use it and felt they had to read every book on the list, so she ended up selling it.  But we like it as suggested reading.

Thank you so much for the suggestions, that helped immensly!  With 5 kids under seven I felt like SCM was enough for me!  Gaeleen, I think I am like your friend in that I would feel like I needed to read every book, too many choices overwhelm me:)  But I can see how it would be helpful like you said with the older ones in their independent time.  Thanks again ladies, Adrienne

I just ordered Oxford First Ancient History from Amazon a few minutes ago for about $26.  There was another one still left.
