Yup – stay inside if it is under 30F here, and you would not go outside for 5-6 months of the year.  Forget Halloween!  (actually, we have been lucky the last 2 halloweens – 2 years ago we went out in just costumes, with the coats in the stroller – unheard of here.  and this last year it was warm enough that it started raining 😐

Yup – the windchill here today is -38C  and we are NOT going outside (except for putting garbage out for pickup, and I may have to run to the store.)  We have been super-cold the last 5 days, and the forcast is for it to continue until Sunday.  My kids are climbing the walls!

Last time it was about 30F here  (it was -5C), my kids were playing outside and came and brought their COATS and Hats in as they were too hot.  Yup, they were playing out there in snowpants and T-Shirts.

Oh ya I send mine out when it’s cold. But not anything colder than 30. We are in So IL near St Louis so it only gets in teens-20’s at night for the most part.

We are having a cold snap here in Wisconsin right now, highs on Monday and Tuesday were 0 and 3 above with wind chills in – 10 and lower. We don’t go out. My boys went out today for about 10 min (high was 16 today). I didn’t have them bundle up like I would normally though. After this 20 seems warm!

I lived in Alaska for a bit while in the Navy and we went out in shorts with temps in the 40’s. Your body gets used to it.

We don’t do much for nature study outside though except to feed the birds.

It was 17 with no wind the other day and we were ice skating on our pond with just are snow pants hats and mittens. We had are deep winter jackets on (think down) and they were just to hot for ice skating.

I’m with Servingwithjoy! -30 is a number I only want to visit in math problems! We’re headed to Utah to ski next week and my two youngest have never seen snow. We have layers and layers and more layers! We must be thin-skinned Floridians! I do have to say that when it’s cold here in N. Florida, it’s bone-chilling because of the humidity. 40 here is way colder than 40 in a drier climate, IMO. It would take the Lord speaking to me in a burning bush type of encounter to get me to move somewhere that cold!

I am from Quebec so you’d think that I could handle cold!! Nope, I hibernate and dream of moving to Florida! Are there many of you there because I’ll take any excuse!!

I used to live in Alaska(Interior region) and 20 above is nothing. That was jacket/sweatshirt weather for us. 😉 Public school kids still have school unless it dips lower than minus 40.They also still go out to recess at minus 20.I have been through minus 70 degree winters. We still went out into town at minus 50 temps though. You have to. You just don’t stop living. There are things to be done ,so you do them. Here in the Midwest the cold chill is way more fierce than Alaska.

High of zero here today with -30 to -40 windchills and lows have been -25 to -30 F for days. I’ve lived in MN my whole life but there is no amount of clothing that will get me to drag my children out when it’s cold and the wind is whipping. We do nature study/science inside then. If its sunny and the wind is calm we could easily go out if it’s above -10 for some period of time.

Oh man…you all are killing me. This week I went out to milk with the temp around 20. I had on a pair of long johns, two pairs of sweart pants, heavy socks and boots, two shirts, a sweat jacket, a heavy coat, two pairs of gloves (I have mild Raynauds -sp?- and my hands get nauseatingly painful,) ear muffs and a hood. LOL! Guess we get accustomed to where we are. Glad I’m here in the winter time. Summer is sometimes another story.

I love this post. I’m looking outside at our sunny winter landscape of around 20F, and thinking, “Wow! It’s so warm! We should get outside.”

@canoearoo, all kinds of people wear shorts and FLIPFLOPS here year round, which is a little crazy. Mostly teenagers…. 😉

@momof4, It sounds like you live in a town where I used to live. Does it happen to have a drive in that is only open in the summer?

Hope you are all staying warm enough, whatever that looks like where you live. 🙂

Y’all have inspired me to get out, get out, get out! We went on a picnic and walk today. We were out for 4 hours! We were all bundled up when a girl jogged by in shorts and a t-shirt. Hahahahhha. But we were still out there and the kids had an absolute blast and that’s why I’m pushing through all my homebodiness! 🙂 I really appreciate all of you!

I am with dmcall3 – you have all inspired me with your fortitude!

Today was the first day of a friend and I going walking together twice a week in the early morning. It was a balmy 34 degrees, but I toughed it out in my sweatpants and jacket knowing that you are all going through much, much worse!

It helped that my friend is from Iowa and had no idea that it was cold outside at all.

@MsMcGee – I lived in Destin, Florida (or L.A. – Lower Alabama) the first 5 years of my marriage, and it spoiled me for life. I am still recuperating and dreaming of moving back one day ;0).

we are going ice skating tomorrow. We haven’t gone in 2 days becase the winds were 20-40 mph thus making the windchill -45. Ice skating is not fun at -45. Not that we didn’t go outside, but ice skating makes your toes cold quick. The windchill should only be -2 tomorrow. We are having a heat wave! lol
