outdoor time in the South

I would like to hear how other Southern moms do outdoor time for their children. As it is heating up here in GA I am finding it harder to keep my kids in during the morning hours for school when by the time we are done with our little bit of schoolwork (my oldest is still very young, we don’t usually do more than a couple of hours right now) it has gotten very hot and humid. And for the most part of the year that is the weather. Does anyone else rearrange their schedule around the hotness? Have you seen any ill effects of doing work at times other than the morning (like Charlotte recommends)? I just hate to sacrifice those cooler, early morning hours when the woods are waking up. I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts….

During the summer, we switch the schedule. We go outside immediately after breakfast and play until about 10am and then we do school.

When we lived in GA, and now in TX, we also swap the morning for outside and the afternoon for school. We’re usually back inside by 10 am and then work the rest of the morning and some of the afternoon. The remainder of the afternoon is for “masterly inactivity” and chores. We go back out after dinner to play at the park, go for a walk or to try to find bats.

I’ve never noticed their school work to suffer by not doing school work in the am. I still consider 10 am the morning! Also, having boys, and one with ADHD, the outside time first actually helps him calm down for school.

We’re in San Antonio, TX and it’s hotter than blazes here (and humid too). We also spend our mornings and evenings outside, middle of the day is for learning and inside chore time. We usually have to go in by 9am if we don’t want to melt! Hope you find what works best for your family 😀

Thanks, this is helpful – I have all boys also and agree that it is nice to let them work some of that energy out first thing in the a.m. (cuts down on the squirmies). What you all have mentioned is sort of what I am striving for in our day. I just kept thinking back to my readings though and how CM recommended doing work right after breakfast, but it just didn’t seem practical to me given what our weather is normally like. I am glad to hear that others do what we are doing and don’t see any ill effects. The early morning (we are early risers) is just such a great time to be outside. Mine still nap for a bit after lunch (the hottest part of our day) and we also go back out after dinner with Daddy and either swim, play in the yard, or go for walks around the property. I love being outdoors, but when it comes to really hot and humid weather I am a wimp! Plus I can’t imagine it’s too fun for them either to be sweltering…

CM lived in England. 😉 Keep that in mind when reading her stuff.

I did consider the England aspect, and that is what brought me to “this is just not practical for the deep South!” (along with the fact that I don’t think it’s possible for us to wear wool during the summer either – sorry, we like our cotton!) My common sense told me that making that adjustment was probably best for us, but I always like some encouragement from others that have tried that and that it works for them too! Thanks!

I just wanted to say it is so nice seeing families doing what is best for their families rather than trying to follow some mold. It is very encouraging.
