I have an 8 year old 3rd grader and an almost 5 year old (sept).  I am having a hard time deciding whether to go with Outdoor Secrets or 106 Days of Creation for them both together?  I don’t know if Outdoor Secrets would be enough for my 3rd grader or if 106 days would be too much for my younger?

Bumping this back up for you … maybe someone can share some helpful thougths?

For what it’s worth, I’m getting ready to start Outdoor Secrets with my 3rd grader, 1st grader, and almost K’er. Then I’m going to move on with all of them to 106 Days once we finish OS. But I can’t say I recommend it b/c I haven’t done it yet. 🙂

We are in the midst of Outdoor Secrets with kids who are 11, 10, 8, 6, and 4.  We are all learning from it.  I do get extra library books for the 11, 10, and 8 year old.  I have them make notebook pages on each chapter.

I am using Outdoor Secrets and its companion guide, along with borrowing the recommended books from the library, with my six year old. It is a gentle start. We are really enjoying it, and I think it would be a good fit for anywhere in that early elementary age range. If you held off on 106 Days until next year, it would probably give your five year old the extra year she needs before walking into a meatier program.

You could have your eight year old make notebook pages, and your 5 year old just draw in her nature journal.

Thank you for the suggestions and JennNC for the bump up! I think I like the idea of using Outdoor Secrets this year and moving on to 106 days next year. Do you think I should get the Outdoor Secrets Companion as well? I’m trying to keep costs down but I don’t mind spending them money if it would help. Thanks again!

We also love Outdoor Secrets and plan to follow it with 106 days.  My kids are 5, 6, and 12. My 12 year old loves science and nature study.  I didn’t originally plan on having him join us, but he listened to me reading and really enjoyed Outdoor Secrets. He decided to add it in on top of his other science assignments.

I use the companion.  I thought it was worth the price and I enjoy the notebooking ideas and book suggestions.  Some of the books are not at my library so I substitute, but we have really enjoyed the suggestions in the Companion.

We still have our Earthworm farm on our kitchen table. LOL. The kids like to look for new tunnels while they eat lunch.

I don’t know anything about Outdoor Secrets, but we’re on our fourth week of 106 Days and my boys are 5 and 6.  (almost 6 and 7)  It hasn’t been too much for them yet.  My 5 year old actually seems to REALLY understand the concepts.  He even nudged me when I was stuck trying to find something to be a prism to make a rainbow.  Hahaha!  🙂  We are loving it so far.  We aren’t that far in….just through overview of creation and Day 1 and just started Day 2.  But I like the way it flows and the simplicity of the projects so far.

We’ve done both. Just recently my 6yo was doing OS and my then 4th grader was always listening and wanting to join in. He was/is doing his own science, but loved all the books that came with OS. Now I are doing the 5th grader’s science with both of them (my 6yo just listens in, it’s an apologia text). When we’re finished with that my 5th grader will do Jack’s Secret w/Notebook and my 6yo will listen to lots of living books/nature study/experiments. Next school year they will both do 106 Days together again OR another apologia text, we’ll see.

I wish science could always be like this. My oldest is not super science-y but is doing the Gen. Science, and it’s going well, but not sweet and simple like the early years.
