I have Outdoor Secrets and wanted to use it with my 5year old and tag along 3year old. I think he would enjoy it very much but I was going over the book list in the Companion and I’m not sure what to do. I was wondering if all the books would be worthwhile purchasing? It’s not something I really wanted to do right now because of cost, but the library is not a good option for us at this season in life. Would older children enjoy these books as well? I just don’t know what to do. Any suggestions?
My ds8 used outdoor secrets with the companion and all recommended books for this year’s science. He loved it and so did my little ones, even my dd11 would make sure she read all of the books because they are simply wonderful stories. I did buy them all bc I don’t use the library well (too many late fees). However, you could use OS alone or simply add in as many as you’d like. It’s quite flexible.
Christie, do you have any specific titles you would recommend more than others? I would love to buy all of them, just not sure if I can justify it right now. I might have to shop around a little.
We are doing OS this coming year. All but 3 or 4 books were available at our library. I bought a couple the library did not have since they were cheap. One I will have to find a replacement. I tend to use the library and if they kids really like the book I will look to buy a copy. I will have a 6yo and tag along 3 yo.
I also keep a list in my purse when I am out at thrift stores just in case:)
Oh Christie, I just missed your post. I’d love to use PBS but I don’t have books to get rid of that anyone would want.I would like to find the books used if I decide to buy them.
I buy credits on PBS, it’s still cheaper than many used stores. We esp. liked
• Johnny Appleseed by Reeve Lindbergh • A Desert Scrapbook: Dawn to Dusk in the Sonoran Desert by Virginia Wright-Frierson • An Earthworm’s Life by John Himmelman • A Seed Is Sleepy by Dianna Hutts Aston • My Favorite Tree by Diane Iverson • (optional) Crinkleroot’s Guide to Knowing the Trees by Jim Arnosky (out of print) • The Robins in Your Backyard by Nancy Carol Willis • Bumblebee at Apple Tree Lane by Laura Gates Galvin (this whole series is nice) • Are You a Dragonfly? By Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries • Flower Garden by Eve Bunting • (optional) Wonderful Pussy Willows by Jerome Wexler (out of print) • Flip, Float, Fly!: Seeds on the Move by JoAnn Early Macken • Water Dance by Thomas Locker • Chippy Chipmunk Parties in the Garden by Kathy M. Miller
I know that’s most of them, but what can I say, I love books!
I am going to do OS this year also. Looks like I can get all the books used through amazon for about $100. But I have decided to break it up in terms and buy just what I need for each term so I can spread the cost out a bit. I am a book person too so I like to buy as opposed to borrow if I can.
Thanks everyone. I was afraid I was being extravagant by even considering purchasing most of the books so I was looking for alternatives but now that I know I’m not alone I think I’ll reconsider because well….like the rest of you I love books.
Buying a little at a time sounds like a good idea.
Thanks for the recommendations, Christie.
