Are there any suggestions of audio books we could listen to in the car that don’t constantly put forth bad examples to get to the moral of the story?
My 6 children are ages 4-12.
I understand the reason behind it, and don’t want to be legalistic. I know the world is full of it and we discuss it, but my children don’t need more ammo for unkind words/tones/disrespect to parents, etc. We always talk about “letting nothing unwholesome come out of our mouths, except what is useful for teaching and building each other up”, but a lot of books books do the opposite and are much louder when it’s audio:)
I know there are lists on the forum somewhere of audio books, but I don’t know if they would be specifically what I’m asking for? For example, Hank the Cowdog has been listed, and we really do enjoy them as the author is very clever and talented, but each book is a whole hour of “idiot/moron/birdbrain”, lying, etc. I’ve just been conflicted about ones like that.
We have some lamplighter theater audios on the iPad (not sure how to play them in the car) but they’ve heard them all several times.
I’d love to be able to get them from the library instead of buying them, as we’ve had several unexpected large house expenses lately, but I’m open to making a list for Christmas gifts from grandparents.
We really enjoy Sugar Creek Gang audio. They have been an investment but thoroughly enjoyed by all my children and myself.
My kids have recently also started enjoying Jonathan Park Adventure series after receiving a series set as a gift.
Quite a few Adventure in Odyssey have also been listened to over and over and over again. I actually find these inexpensively on cassette. Our old van has a cassette player, but they can also be found inexpensively at thrift stores and use batteries to listen to them in the car. I know a family that does this and it works great.
We also have listened to all of the A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy.
If you can get your iPad connected to your car audio system (is there a plug in the radio for an “auxiliary”? That would be where you could plug a wire into it and then the other end into the headphone jack on your iPad), LibriVox has lots of classics (Little Women, Kidnapped, etc.).
Our family listens to k-love radio and our favorite audiobooks are the whole series of Little House and Anne of Green Gables, Little Women and Julie and the Wolves and Lamplighter theatre. Martha
Thank you for the suggestions, I’ll try to figure out how to get the iPad to play in the car. It has a tape deck/CD, but our library got rid of all books on tape; those were wonderful for the little ones:(
We have enjoyed Uncle Rick audios from Character Concepts. Join their email list and they send out links to some free downloads. They have periodic sales, including 50% off around Thanksgiving.
Library: Charlotte’s Webb, Cricket in Times Square, Little House on the Prairie series, Cam Jansen short mysteries, Jim Weiss audios, Boxcar Children (first 19) and classics like The Little Princess, Heidi, etc.
You should be able to find cassette tape audio books cheap on eBay or at library sales.
