FYI: Swanson Vitamins sells Redmond for $4.59 for 4 oz. Pretty comparable to 3-6 oz tubes of Dessert Essance for around $17. I may try next time I put in an order.
We use http://www.roseofsharonacres.com Tooth Spritz….nice stuff. Completely natural, good for you. It’s about $25 for a bigger bottle. And that lasts our family of 6 (4 are kids—they sometimes mis-aim and use more than they’d have to) about 5 months, give or take. Four of us like the Peppermint best, two of us like the cherry best.
Then, after brushing with the spitz, my “soft teeth” people brush with black walnut powder (http://www.bulkherbstore.com) and use it as sort of a polish, then rinse with water. They do 5 days on/2 days off so as to not debelop an allergy to the black walnut.
Glycerin from what I have been reading coats your teeth and so prevent them from really becoming clean when you brush. It apparently creates a build up that can take up to 2 weeks to remove.
Carrageenan is something I try to avoid. You can google it, there are different article on it, from what I understand the way is proceesed is not always ideal and I just prefere not to take a chance on it.
I ordered Redmond Earthpaste in wintergreen and lemon and received them today from Vitacost. The warning on the side of the box says, “California Residents Proposition 65 WARNING: This product contains trace amounts of lead, a substance known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. This product may not be appropriate for children or pregnant women.”
So now I am searching again. I may try the spray or make my own yet.
What? that is crazy, that is suppose to be a very good brand. I need to research this because I am using the Redmond Bentonite clay to make my toothpaste.
Well I am surprised too since there were so many positive reviews and I did not read anywhere on Vitacost about lead being in it. I am starting to think we should just rub our teeth without anything!
Not sure you need to worry about it, I will still use mine but I do prefere to make my own because I feel more comfortable w/stevia than Xylotol, especially since my dentist offered me Xylotol gum. To me if it is backed by the dental association I get suspicious!
This is timely because I just had a dentist appt today and apparently my last pregnancy did a number on my teeth! I haven’t had a cavity since elementary age. I had 2 at my last visit 6 months ago and now I have 4!!! And I chipped my front tooth. He said that pregnancy can really weaken your teeth. He told me to use ACT mouthwash to help remineralize my enamel. Any advice with that one? Thanks!
yeah my dentist gives samples of those and I throw them away!
So much junk in that stuff IMHO, fluoride, alcohol (which is really bad for your teeth) and what not.
The dentist always try to convince my husband he needs that for his gum but I keep making him mouthwash w/sea salt (not supermarket seasalt, I use Redmond’s) and tea tree oil.
There are many natural things you can use for remineralize your teeth.
Here is one recipe (although I wouls personaly use a good quality Stevia (not Truvia for sure) instead of Xylotol.
mrsmccardell- here is an article on healing cavities naturally. It is from the Paleo Mom and follows the teachings of Weston A. Price. But it is interesting to see it work for her.
I found a cavity on a back bottom molar a couple of weeks ago! 🙁 I’m currently using many of the tips from the previously posted links to attempt to heal it. It’s pretty large and came on quickly, so in pretty sure it’s a result of my adrenal fatigue and my body’s poor ability at absorbing minerals right now. It’s a brown spot, not black, which I’m not sure if that’s good or not. It’s very sensitive, especially to cold and anything with sugar. I’ve doubled my dose of high vitamin butter oil/fermented cod liver oil. I’m also taking homemade dessicated liver capsules.
I make my own toothpaste, but lately I’ve been using XyliWhite–I know, I know. I was just so tired that I temporarily gave up many of the things I had been making myself in favor of the convenience of buying. Now that some of my energy has returned, I have a little more motivation to go back to my homemade toothpaste.
We don’t do flouride treatments at all. In fact, we rarely go to the dentist. My kids have been once in their lives! I have had a total of 7 cavities in my life–all after becoming a mom. So I agree that pregnancy often wreaks havoc on teeth. This will be my first cavity to try healing on my own.
petitemom, I take quite a few supplements including iodine (I’m also hypothyroid), 15,000 IU daily vitamin D3, magnesium oil, dessicated thyroid, dessicated liver, 4 TBS daily collagen, 200 mcg selenium, and a capsule that is a mixture of l-theanine and herbs called Stress Guard from Oregon’s Wild Harvest. I also eats tons of carbs which helps my energy levels as well as helps me sleep better. I use a quality sea salt liberally and eat as much good fat (butter, coconut oil, grass-fed beef) as I want. From October through mid-December I followed Matt Stone’s rest and re-feeding program extensively. In the past couple weeks, I have gone back to my more WAPF Traditional way of eating, while still focusing heavily on carbs. In those three months I raised my basal body temp by almost 2 degrees and feel so much better. I still have a ways to go, as I am still somewhat constipated (sorry if that’s TMI!), have some nights where I wake between 2-4 a.m. (a sure sign of adrenal issues), and struggle with having enough energy to get through the day 1-2 days per week. However, this is a VAST improvement over how I felt 3 months ago.
I will say that I’m not a believer in long-term supplementation, if it can be avoided. I believe that nutrients should come from a nutrient-dense diet that allows all food groups, prepared for maximum digestion and mineral absorption when needed (ie, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.). But I also believe that sometimes the body gets so behind that it becomes necessary to “catch up” with intense supplementation in addition to that nutrient dense lifestyle. That’s where I’m at right now.
Misty, my homemade recipe is a mixture of baking soda, coconut oil, vitamin K, bentonite clay, and peppermint oil. We are on vacation right now, but I plan to make toothpaste when we return home. I powdered some pastured eggshells a while back, intending to use them as a calcium supplement, but I think I’ll add them to my toothpaste. I also try to remember to oil pull every few days with coconut oil.
Wow Lindsey that is a lot of stuff! Are you working w/an homeopath or you find all that on your own?
All I take is “Just Barley” powder(been taking that for years), the Standard Process Adrenal Complex and the DrChristopher Vitalerbs.
I though of taking the fermented cod liver oil but it is so expensive. Also I know it tastes nasty so I don’t know how well I would do taking that on a regular base.
I take other things to boost my immune system if I feel something coming but that’s about it.
I would not know where to start to do anything more.
Misty I posted the recipe I use a few post back, I tried a lot of them and that one works very well.
