I think someone may have asked about this before, can’t find it.

We went to the dental school for the kids cleaning and exam.

I skipped on the Fluoride and they made me doubt myself.

Everything I have been reading on Fluoride has been negative but they said as long as you don’t swallow it, it is ok and will make your teeth strong.

I felt like I was going against everything they believe, making my own toothpaste, not using Fluoride.

We have no Fluoride in the water and make my own tootpaste. I do put calcium-magnesium in it. What else can we do to make sure kids have strong teeth?

What do you all think about Fluoride? Any off you get it at the dentist?

And also I am wondering about the sealant? I did it w/my oldest son even though I had not really researched it but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Now they tell me they came off and I will need to do it again.

I am a formal dental assistant. I have not worked since I got married 13 yrs ago! I didn’t know then what I know now! We do not use Fluoride either! It is not good for you at all! They say don’t swallow it, that makes me laugh, for everyone will tend to swallow some every once in a while! And we are talking how many yrs of exposure?? Many U.S. cities are trying to ban fluoride in the water! hmmm, wonder why? Many developed countries do not allow fluoride in the water! So that is the water, what about toothpaste?

Have you ever heard the story of a little poo in the brownies? No one wants a just a “little” poo, it is the same as a lot! A little fluoride in the toothpaste is the same! Eventually it builds in the body and is harmful! Yes, fluoride puts a very small thin layer of shell on teeth. The layer is very superficial though. Why is it that we still have high rates of dental decay and we have fluoridated water and toothpaste galore?! Shouldn’t we be protected? The way to fight decay is by proper dental care and healthy eating!

As for sealants, I do think they provide some protection. They are made of a flowing “plastic” that is cured when ultraviolet light hits it. The surface of the tooth is “roughed’ up w/ a dental bur for the sealant to adhere. Since it is such a thin layer, it is a high possibility they will fall off due to chewing! And since we are talking about sealants made of plastic you have the risk of BPA exposure! Sigh! It seems like everything we do is harmful doesn’t it??

Never used fluoride, never did sealants, and my 21 year old daughters have had no cavities or fillings needing to be done, they have great teeth.  I put it down, to proper hygiene – flossing, water pik etc and a good diet, no soda, regular professional cleanings every 6 months.

No flouride here but we do sealants.  My dh’s side has really soft teeth and my mom does.  Knock on wood I don’t and a few of the kids done.  We have had cavitites.. what do you do?  I mean we eat good, brush good but it doesn’t stop what may or may not happen.  When the dentist has questioned me I say I have a choice and I choose NO.

I read the Mercola article and a couple more on both fluoride and sealants and realized maybe I should have done my research before posting!!

yeah will not do the fluoride nor the sealants.

What I read about the sealant is that appart containing BPA(why don’t they make them BPA free already !?!) there is a risk if the tooth is not completely dry of cavaties forming between the tooth and the sealant.

Doesn’t sound like a risk I want to take! Maybe if I went to a very good holistic dentist but that’s too much money w/4 kids.

We did fluoride at the dentist last time but this post has caused me to think about it more and I won’t have them get it next time. Moving forward, I’d like to change toothpaste. Has anyone used Spry toothpaste? Is it good? Can you just use baking soda for toothpaste?

Wings2fly – My kids and husband really like Jason Deepsea Spearmint, and it is fluoride free.  We buy it on Vitacost.  I make my own toothpaste for myself because I can not have mint or cinnamon and can not handle the taste of anise flavored which is the only other flavor I’ve found.

No flouride here either! It is recognized as a neuro-toxin, so it’s not going in our bodies. We make our own toothpaste and don’t get flouride treatments at the dentist. Don’t doubt yourself just because some guy in a white coat makes you feel like he’s smarter than you are. If you’ve done the research for yourself and feel strongly about no flouride, then stick to your guns with confidence!

For those with softer teeth, it might be worth a look into teeth remineralization. It is possible; I don’t care what the dentist tells you. Some foods to help with this are fermented cod liver oil, high vitamin butter oil, raw milk and cheese, and cutting out most grains and sugar, especially refined ones. Two books I highly recommend if you’re serious about making your teeth stronger, helping sensitivity, and even healing cavities are Cure Tooth Decay by Rami Nagiel and Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price.

thanks Lindsey, it is good to be reminded not to get intimidated for this and other things as well.

wings2fly and blue j the spry and jason toothpaste both contain glycerin and from what I read it is better to avoid since it prevents the teeth from getting clean.

Spry also has Xantam gum which as far as I know is a GMO.

I would say it is still much better than most toothpaste in the supermarket but

It would better to make your own, there are a few recipe online w/coconut oil and what not.

I am using a tooth powder right now from Dr.Christopher (found on Amazon). It is good as long as you don’t mind your toothbrush beeing green!!

We finished the Spry and I am in search of something else.  From other reviewers, I need to watch out for SLS (sodium laurel sulfate) and carrageenan, which some say are toxic carcinogens.  I thought I found one of Jason’s at vitacost, but it has the glycerin.  Any recommendations?

We have done both fluoride and sealants. I am in favor of the sealants because I have soft teeth and even though I had a good diet and hygiene as a child I had a quite a few cavities and fillings in my molars. My teeth are straight and look good on the surface. I do have good gums, but I wish there had been sealants then. I wouldn’t have had so many fillings.

I don’t want that for my children. I worry that as I age those fillings will come out and the shell of a tooth I have left will break apart and I will have many missing teeth in the back. I also had aluminum fillings(another risk factor) although most have been changed over as I have gotten older and needed some replaced. They don’t last forever. I am trying the cod liver oil.

My four children have not had any cavities in almost 16 years and I think the sealants have a big part in that.

I am concerned about fluoride. It is in our water. However we drink water from a filter that filters it out. But what about every other way water gets into our body? I have eliminated it from our toothpaste- try Melalueca tooth polish. My parents grew up during the depression without running water and electricity until they were in their teens. They had no cavities and only brushed with baking soda until they were near adulthood.

We chose to tell our dentists that we do not want x rays unless they are absolutely necessary. However, saying that… an x ray did find an uncommon dental situation for my son. His adult I teeth were impacted and steps had to be taken before they tried to begin descending. That x ray saved him some pain and helped us to form a plan early and save up somewhat for the tremendous cost of the surgeries and braces.

Sadly, there seems to be risk no matter which way you go. petitemom- I suggest you read, and pray and then make the decision that is best for your family. It may not be what others do, but if you pray and discuss it with your husband, you should rest in your decision.

Wings to fly, after much experimenting this is by far the best recipe I have found:

    http://www.cheekybumsblog.com/2012/11/diy-clay-toothpaste-recipe/

I use peppermint essential oil for my husband and I and anis essential oil (not flavor, I tried that, trust me, that is no good!) for the kids.

thanks for the replies, Benita I did do the sealant for my oldest child last week but no fluoride w/anyone.

Apparently I wrote this long ago enough to forget that I had reasearched about it. I didn’t know what to do when the dentist asked me if I wanted to do the sealant. Hopefully he doesn’t get side effects.

wings2fly, Laughing I use Dessert Essence tea tree oil toothpast with baking soda. Comes in a 3 pack off amazon. Tastes great. I have receding gum issues, I’m assuming from past brushing habits? I needed something to keep my mouth germ free. Dentist and her asst didn’t seem concerned I’m not using flouride in my paste. They said I eat healthy so no need to. I get it in my water I assume but we drink mainly from our filter in the fridge.http://www.amazon.com/Desert-Essence-Toothpaste-Natural-Baking/dp/B000WSV83I/ref=pd_sbs_hpc_1

For our kids we do do the flouride treatments and store bought toothpaste. I will switch at some point. They get orthodontic work and they STRESS flouride. Pediatric dentist said flouride doesn’t cause probs. I’m not sure what it the right answer. Frown

Desert essence does contain glycerin and Carrageenan which from what I understand are better to avoid.

The only toothpaste i found that does not contain that or any other suspicious ingredients is the Redmond toothpaste but it is super expensive, that’s why I make my own! And my kids really like it, my 4 year old wanted to eat it but I said no to that!!

What is bad about glycerin and carrageenan?
