I am having surgery a week from today. I just had surgery 2 months ago for a different issue. This surgery is to reconnect a tendon to my foot. It is pretty comprehensive and I will be none weight bearing for 8-12 weeks. I am looking for tried and true freezer/crockpot meals that a 7 yr. old could do. 🙂 Any help would be appreicated!
Also, this will be the first cast any of us have had. Any ideas on how to shower/bathe with it? Thanks,
I don’t have lots of freezer space to keep whole meals in the freezer, so something that I like to do is to cook meat ahead and freeze it in meal sizes. I do this with ground beef and then it’s pretty easy to make it into spaghetti, lasagna, tacos, sloppy joe’s, etc. I also do this with chicken.
I am so sorry to hear this. I hope you family/friends around to help you. Praying for you. Soups, anything you can put into a freezer bag and then defrost and throw into a casserole dish, cheeseburger pie, comes to mind. As mentioned above taco’s, sloppy’s, get burgers premade and freeze. Shred some chicken. maybe just come up with 2 different weeks of meals and then 3-4 times that (or more in your case) and stick with the plan.
I pray all goes well, Polly. We have duct taped plastic bags over casts, but a foot will be tough. I’m sure the doctor will have a suggestion though.
Meal ideas for crock pot
Spaghetti sauce with pre cooked meat (I make big batches for 4-6 meals worth)
Chili
Mexican meat – 1/2 pork and 1/2 beef with nothing else. When fork tender you add chopped green chilis, salsa verde and a small amount of roux to a bit of the juice. It’s in a cookbook called dinners in the freezer which I like. Use on tacos, nachos, burritos, etc
Black beans (no need to personal)
Pot roast with veggies
Chicken pieces and BBQ sauce
Other easy ideas
Rotisserie chicken, chopped & served with pasta and pesto
Quick beans and rice (can blk beans with stewed Tomato and sautéed onion and garlic)
Grilled cheese and tomato soup
Spinach and bacon and Swiss cheese quiche in prebaked shell or other quiche
Spinach and pasta bowl – fresh spinach, cooked pasta, crumbled feta and sun dried tomatoes
Smoothies for breakfast
Blended soups if you have a stick blender
Pizza
HTH. Praying it goes well and you have a speedy recovery.
Hope your surgery goes well. Praying for a quick recovery for you!
Some quick meals we like:
Chicken breasts with BBQ sauce in crockpot. Cook 6 hours or so. Pull apart and eat on buns.
Meatballs (we use Trader Joes turkey) with 1 jar grape jelly and 1/2 jar BBQ sauce in crockpot on high for 2 hours. We serve over ww noodles.
Spinach Spaghetti. Cook 1 lb meat. Add one jar spaghetti sauce and 1/2 bag frozen spinach (thawed). Combine with one bag cooked ww noodles. Large batch that freezes well.
When my daughter had cross tendon surgery and tendon lengthening and was in a cast for a while, we bought her a shower cover for the brace, which was of a waterproof cloth and meant she could shower and bathe without problems. We got it in England but I am sure they must have them here. Amazon sell shower cast covers out of plastic, but they I think might be disposable, the one we have we kept because it can be reused over and over and if she needs another surgery we will have it ready. Good luck, my daughter healed well from her op which sounds similar…
Thank you, Ladies! I’m really dreading it. The first surgery seemed much more managable. We also are moving in June. One week out – I am feeling overwhelmed. 🙂 Thank you so much! Our family is far away and we live in an erea of self sufficiency. We will make it I am sure! God will provide!
