I’m generally a very organized person and have tried to pass that characteristic onto my kids, ds almost 9 and dd7 1/2. They have baskets, buckets, and shelves for their things and really do a good job of keeping *most of their stuff where it belongs. Except the tops of their dressers. Stuff keeps collecting up there! And it’s random stuff too–stuff that doesn’t seem to have a place and keeps popping up on top of the dresser. I-pods. Rocks. Coins from foreign countries (not kidding). A plastic necklace from a recent birthday party. Church bulletins.
It’s getting really annoying.
And every time I try to get them to throw this or that away, I’m always met with the response “But it’s a treasure!” or “I’m saving that because it’s special!” So I allow the saving to happen only to find that item or another one out on the dresser again later. I would like their dressers to be a surface which is pleasing to the eye, like for a lamp, a framed photo or two, and their money jars, but all I ever see is the junk. I realize that this isn’t bothering them; it’s just me who hates it. To them, it is pleasing to the eye. 😉 I wish we didn’t need the dressers, but we do. Even though all their clothes are hanging in the closets, there’s no place for socks, undies, and pj’s too.
Would there be space inside one of the dresser drawers to keep a small box for such treasures? Then occasionally you could instruct them how to purge it.
My children each have two large lockable toolboxes (with combination locks…I keep the codes in our home records). The children clean the treasure boxes out when they feel the need for space to fit more treasures.
I have a nice wicker basket in my closet for my husband to drop his coins, tools, receipts, and such. It is twelve inches square so it’s large enough to hardly ever need to be cleaned out.
So…maybe a treasure chest or two…or a nice basket sized for the top of the dresser…
I have allowed each child a quart-size Mason jar for their treasures. Both of their jars are currently full, and neither child is willing to part with any contents. Dh and I are NOT sentimental…I really don’t know where they get it. Obviously they can’t keep their iPods in the treasure jars. I suppose I need to make peace with the fact that their iPods do get used on a daily basis and can be left on the dresser when not in use.
ha! ha! I get annoyed w/the same thing except that if I think of it there are a few places around the house where it tends to happen as well! I find it hard to keep everything uncluttered all the time!! Once in while I get in uncluttering mood and you better get out of my way!!
@petitemom, I’m the same way! We have built-in dressers in our closets, and my dh’s side looks worse than the kids! Drives me crazy, but it’s his dresser and I’m not his mom. We also have a bar in our kitchen that tends to collect random stuff too. Our house is too big for us. You don’t normally hear people say that, but I believe that the less flat space you have to put your stuff, the less clutter you’ll have. That was true for us until we moved into this big ol’ house; I can’t wait to move again!
We also have a house that is too big! I can’t complain about it, it is a nice house but it is so much work and heating. No flat space would be a good idea, I should get dressers that are all round on top!
Our house has been on the market since last summer and no one ever came to see it. Slow market around here, in God’s time…
I have the same problem. It seems to be a home for my daughters doll get away retreat… 🙂
However, I thought of a good idea. We purchased treasure chest boxes at family dollar. You may have one by you or could look on line. Anyway, they are cute little treasure chests that could store stuff of importance neatly on the dresser. They come in many sizes so you just need to find out how much space you are willing to loose to it. They are nicely decorative. My son decided to put all of his legos in the largest one. My daughter put all of her doll clothes in hers. Since they are treasures they should be put in a treasure chest. NO? You can also get a small lock for them if you want but we never use one.
I limit the amount of items my kids may have on their dressers to four. They dust it once a week and have to clean away the extras. They each have a junk drawer to keep their junk in. I don’t care how much stuff they keep in there, but it has to fit and that drawer gets cleaned out about twice a year. It drives me crazy too. I simply don’t understand why anyone would want all that clutter, but this is the compromise.
We have “collection boxes” for each of our children. It’s just a lunch box, but they are allowed to put all their special treasures and things they are collecting into there. If they run out of room, then they need to purge some stuff from their collection box.
