Really off-topic, I know.  We have a long dining room table.  It’s walnut, so I’d like to protect the wood from too much wear and tear.  I’ve used a clear plastic cover in the past, but our dining room is more formal now and that’s looking out of place in there.  Any suggestions for something that looks nice, but is still durable?

I go to the fabric store and get beautiful prints on vinyl. It’s lovely looking, but can still wipe clean.

Could you make a tablecloth out of outdoor fabric? JoAnn’s sells some very pretty patterns in durable outdoor fabric, if you sew or know someone who could sew it for you.

Also, canvas drop cloths that you find at a hardware store for about $15. You could paint it to match your colors.

Finally, oil cloth. There are very cute patterns out there, although I’m not sure how much the cost is.

I ordered a coated cloth from http://www.lepinparasol.com about 8 years ago and it still looks new. I restitched one hole in a seam, but other than that it looks almost new. The best part is just wiping it down after meals! They make them custom to any size. Yes, it’s pricey, but not when you figure it doesn’t have to be washed constantly and it’s held up for so long!

If you can find some table pads in the size you need from someone who is maybe downsizing (or Craigslist?), and then just use a nice, washable table cloth. I have a friend who looks for older ones in great shape at garage sales, so they are inexpensive but durable, and then she has enough to throw on a clean one whenever the current one needs to be washed.

You could also get a dining table pad – there are a variety available on Amazon. You would still need to choose tablecloths, but would have an extra layer of protection against spills, bumps and hot dishes.

I do use table pads, but I LOVE my coated table cloth. It feels very soft and not like plastic.

I have a table that is 10 ft long.  I go to Micheal’s (craft store) and buy clear plastic.  It’s like for outdoor furniture etc.  I then had put some large maps one of the states and the other of the world on my table under it.  Really nice looking ones from Office Max.  The nice thing is the clear is always available as it get torn and ripped with 9 of us.  I usually replace it about 2 or 3 times a year.  The down side – I am sure once we either get rid of, sell or get older and don’t need the table to seat 12 on a nightly basis it will need to be refinished because many of these vynal products adhere and may pull the varnish..

Good luck.  I am loving the ideas here!

I used a flannel-backed vinyl table cloth UNDER my pretty table cloth.  I hate the feel of vinyl on my arms – so that’s why I put it under my pretty one.  I also HATE wiping the table with a rag – I’d rather shake a tablecloth!  That’s my other reason.  As an added benefit, my table is in beautiful shape after constant use for 5 years.

So, where do you find oil cloth or a coated tablecloth?

I like the inexpensive tablecloths from Sam’s Club. I like just shaking them out. I don’t use it on the table except when we eat there. Otherwise I just use a runner or pretty little square of fabric under the centerpiece. I have pretty tablecloths if I am having something special. But not for everyday.

For our kitchen tabe, we use placemats when we eat. They really protect the table.  Durable fabric ones wash very easily and over time I have collected plenty. Easy to make also.  They can be reused if not dirty. They make the table look pretty and protect it while being easier to clean than tablecloths. I have some pretty napkins, but for everyday we use the plain white ones from Sam’s Club.  They last a good while and I have collected quite a few over time.  They can be used more than once for us if not dirty.  I wash a load of placemats and napkins once a week along with aprons.
