I’m so frustrated this morning. My daughter came down with strep and we got her swabbed then on an antibiotic quick. She’s feeling like new again. Then my son came down withe same weird symtoms that she’d had so I called in and the doctors assured me that it happens in households so we got him an antibiotic except it isn’t working. He’s been on the meds for 2/3 days and was slightly better but not now. He’s had a spking fever all night but is thankfully resting now. We’re off to see the doctor again shortly and their theory is that I am the carrier and have strep myself! Our symtoms have been nothing like strep – tired, achy, horrible cramping and diarrhea, off and on fevers. No sore throats. No consistent fevers.
My one experience with strep was so fast and furious – fever of 104, sore throat so bad I could not swallow – so this surprised me. Diarrhea? Just seems weird.
And have you all ever had a child on an antibiotic for strep who then gets exposed again and gets it again? I’m not thinking perfectly straight as I have been up and down all night with my son. I just thought the wisdom on here might make me feel better.
Are there any cleaning methods I might be missing? Or is this all just a matter of treatment by antibiotic. I should mention we never, ever go to the doctors around here. The last time the kids were in before this it had been years. We don’t over use prescriptions so I’m not against this intervention by any means.
I have not treated strep with antibiotics – I am not saying it’s the wrong decision as you know best I am just saying I have not. I always treat strep with charcol, we take it as a powder and gargle with with and then swallow. It pulls all the bad stuff away from the throat and then cleans you from the inside out (litterly). This is usually available at co-ops and I know online. I have had mine for a long time and don’t remember where I got it, cause a little goes a long way.
diarrhea – I would go to the BRAT diet to just help with that in general. Lots of water for the fever, and a good probiotic if you have any around.
These are just my goes to’s as what we have done in the past. Good luck and I will be praying for your little ones. It’s never good when one of our children is down. Hugs and blessings
I have read to get a new toothbrush when treated for strep, someone on this forum posted how to kill bacteria and keep the toothbrush, but I forgot how, maybe with peroxide.
Like Misty, we have not used antibiotics for strep either. Actually, our children haven’t had a course of antibiotics in over five years. We treat everything from colds and flu to ear infections to strep and tummy bugs at home, naturally. My go-to for anything infectious is garlic. Mince up a clove, put it in a glass of juice, and down it. It’s not pleasant, but it works very well. Do this 3-4 times a day for several days. Your breath (and likely sweat) will smell like garlic, but garlic is a natural anti-bacterial and really cleanses the body of invaders. The great thing about garlic is that it will fight tummy bugs too, which sounds more likely in your case.
I also fall back on colloidal silver, sublingually, both to fight infections and to strengthen immunity during particularly “sick” times of the year.
Have you considered that perhaps the antibiotics are causing the diarrhea? One of the reasons we are so opposed to antibiotics is that they throw the gut’s delicate balance off, killing off the bad as well as the good bacteria. This can cause a host of issues: yeast infections, thrush, constipation, diarrhea, and yes, other infections. Granted, I am NOT saying you should NEVER use antibiotics. They are life-saving in rare instances, but unfortunately they are very overused in our society. I had to take a round of antibiotics two years ago because of a UTI that turned into a terrible kidney infection, and no matter what I did naturally, nothing was working. I fought it on my own for two weeks before landing in the ER. So, please use the antibiotics if you feel you need them, but in your case it doesn’t sound like they are working.
If you don’t already, start taking a good probiotic. I highly recommend BioKult and Inner-Eco. We take Inner-Eco because it tastes good and is made from coconut water. We have taken BioKult, but it is expensive and I have to order it online as I can’t find it in my area.
Please let us know when you’re all better! I know this is miserable for you.
In the book Beyond Antibiotics, the authors claim that studies show that if antibiotics are given for strep within the first 48 hrs. actually increase the risk of a recurrent infection by teo to eight times (from my book Mommy Diagnostics-Shonda Parker, Professional Family Herbalist).
Besides, antibiotics make you weak against soething else that comes along.
Also, I just thought of this: they give ultra strong antibiotics now compared to when you were young and if your children are having diarrhea from it, then it’s probably too strong. For other children-those accustomed to taking antibiotics-it may not have this type of affect.
Diarrhea can be caused by the anti-biotics. High probiotics and 1 tsp. bentonite clay per cup of water=1 dose given after last bout of diarrhea, not to be given more than 4 doses (from MOmmy Diagnostics)
Though I try not to stop diarrhea, as it’s the body’s method of expelling the bad stuff; however, I always give 1-2 cups of warmed bone broth (preferably free-range chicken) with extra garlic and salt daily when sick with anything. The gelatin is good for the intestinal lining and the rest is good for immunity. Also, soothing to the throat. If it’s caused from the drugs, then it may not stop and if it were me, and mine aren’t staying hydrated, then I’d try to at least slow it down or stop it.
They need electrolytes. Natural ones are: kombucha and water kefir (though will sting the throat); I think young coconut water is your very best choice that won’t hurt the throat (and you can buy this at the store).
Also, gargling with colloidal silver or buying a spray. Also, taking 1 tsp. a day for their immunity.
If you are a so-called carrier, then you should be giving yourself more probiotics and taking supplements to boost your immune system. Goldenseal is for bacteria, only take for 7 days, echinecea for viral and over-all immunity, take for 3 weeks at a time. Garlic pills and cloves- for both viral and bacterial. Vit. C increase, 250-500 mg. at a time 2-3 times a day for prevention. Peppermint tea would be good from what I’ve read.
If your children are under ten, then I’d recommend the Herbs for Kids Echinecea/Goldenroot tincture for their immune system. GOldenroot is for bacterial and echinecea will help with over-all immunity and inflammation.
