As much as it pains me to think I have to do this, I need to take drastic measures about keeping dd in the house unless I can supervise her. That said, I have heard about safety locks that can be mounted out of the child’s reach and keep the door closed even when the child tries to open it. But I don’t know what kind to buy. I need one that fits a standard single door with doorknob. Any suggestions?

We have locks high up on our doors. How old is this child? We have this kind on the front door (besides the deadbolt and regular lock on the knob). A child CAN open it, obviously, but we have it up out of reach even when the child is on a chair.

She’s 6 1/2 with cognitive delays and possible autism. I’m wanting something that doesn’t have to be drilled into place.

We have a similar thing a Tristan up out of reach. Being woken up to a neighbor bringing your 2 year old home because “she was going for a walk” is scary!

As foster parents we were not allowed to have locks on doors that the kids can’t undo- even though the kids we would have were often escape artisits. We were allowed to have alarms on the doors though. Over the years we had a number of different kinds.

This kind has a remote alarm- so if your houdini might try to disable the alarm, it is more difficult for them to succeed. And lastly, this is the type we use for our youngest right now. He hates having his door closed and has a hard time sleeping but tends to get up and wanter the house at night and get into trouble. Its hard to train him in the right habits if he gets to the fun part before I can catch him! We set this motion detector across the hall in front of his bedroom door and then we know as soon as he leaves his room.
