You ladies are such a wealth of experience and knowledge.  I could use some advice concerning my dh:

My dh is the real out-doorsy type who doesn’t alwasy believe in sunscreen, and certainly never used it as a child.  I’ve always been concerned as I feel he is a prime candidate for skin cancer.  Last winter I notice a slighly darker mark on his face, about an inch from the corner of his eye, kind of an imperfect circle a little smaller than a dime with a lighter center.  It wasn’t raised, just a discolouration.  I asked him to have a look at it, but he said it was nothing, that it had been there awhile, and made some comment about me not looking at him often enough if I was just noticing it.  About the same time my mother was under going treatment for a number of melanoma spots on her arms and legs.  I thought perhaps it was jus the fact that my mother was going through this that was causing me to be more aware of this particular spot on dh’s face.

When my mother visited in March, she convinced me that that I should go a head and make an appointment for him and insit on having it looked at.  He was furious that I’d made an appointment and insisted I cancel it, so I did.  Later the next week, he did have it looked at without my knowing.  He told me the doctor told him it was nothing and to tell me to lighten up.

So, Monday evening I noticed that this spot has gone from beige to pink and is slightly raised.  He said it had been like that for a while and looked worse because he’d been picking at it.  I asked him why it was bothering him now that he’d be scratching or picking at it unless something had changed about it recently.  He just shrugged and repeated that the doctor said it was nothing and he doesn’t think there is any reason to have it re-evaluated.

Has anyone had any experience with skin cancer?  Does this sound like something I should really insist on having looked at again?

My then 5 yr old son had a spot on his knee that kept growing at alarming rates.  And the color was going from light beige to dark almost black.  We did go see a dermatologist and had it taken off for she wasn’t sure either and had it tested.  To our relief it came back negitive.  But he has others she noted to keep an eye on.  Now we were lucky, but I would definately go and have it looked at and tested.  We don’t have insurance and it was only $452 for everything and a great relief to us.  I will keep your dh in our prayers.  Just to let you know I don’t do sunscreen either but will apply coconut oil if we feel the sun is to much or we’ll be on the lake all day.  just some thoughts.  Good luck.

I just had a mole removed…Dr. had said to go to derma because of it’s size. Have you seen the ABC’s of moles? http://www.afraidtoask.com/skinCA/skinwarning.html

I’m the type that if I have any concern I get it checked out. Dear hubby, not so much…has one I want him to have looked at but is busy right now…but said I could make an appt., which is good.  Since your dh’s is changing, and he’s so outdoorsy I would have it looked at.  Better safe than sorry. Just my .02:)  Gina

Not to alarm, but if it’s itching that’s a sign to be checked out: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/moles. Could totally be nothing, but I would rather set my mind at ease than worry about it! Blessings, Gina
