We are slowly breaking old kitchen plates and bowls. We also grew our family since originally buying those plates and bowls. What’s happening is that we may use the small plates for breakfast and that leaves us 1 plate by lunch time. If we have company we definitely have to buy paper plates. We are a family of 6. Do you have multpile place settings for your family and for when you have company? Or do you just buy paper plates? Any input?
We buy most of our dishes from IKEA (not sure if you have one nearby). Their everyday dishware is durable and cheap. I like to have 12 sets of everything so we don’t have to run the dishwasher as much. Everything is white so it all matches and is easy to replace. We use salad plates for breakfast and larger plates for lunch and dinner. That seems to work pretty good, but when we have company we still run out sometimes.
Also, in my experience stoneware is more durable than porcelain.
Well…..my answer will probably be different from most, but here goes. We registered for 10 place settings of everyday dishes when we got married (a place setting being dinner plate, salad plate, soup bowl, tea cup, saucer). We also got 15 place settings of china, which we use, but rarely. After 11 years, I have broken 2 of my salad plates for my everyday dishes, leaving me with 8 full place settings. So we can have a family of four to dinner and not have to break out paper. BUT, when my kids were toddlers, I purchased some plastic, sectioned plates from Target along with some small plastic bowls from Ikea. I bought 6 sectioned plates, and the bowls came in a set of 8 or 10, I can’t remember. So, most days, my kids use the plastic stuff during lunch. Or when we have company over who happen to have small children, we give those children the plastic and still have enough place settings for all the adults and older children.
I don’t typically buy paper plates. We did have 22 here for Thanksgiving, so I got pretty, fall paper plates, but that was simply because I WAS NOT about to wash dinner, salad, and dessert plates for 22 people! I don’t like all the trash that paper creates. The dishes we received when we married were $45/place setting. That sounds like a lot, but we’ve been married 11 years and using them daily and two broken ones in the span of that time doesn’t seem like a lot to me. Funny thing is that I’m the one who broke both of them–no the children!
missceegee uses Corielle (sp?), and she’s got tons. They’re practically indestructible and are very inexpensive. Even if one did happen to break, it would not be hard to replace, unless the pattern was discontinued or something. I think that might be a good option for us in the future when my kids are doing more dishes. I’m slowly starting to get rid of the plastic plates. My kids are 8.5 and almost 10, and are much more careful now than when they were 3 and 4.
I do love me some dishes though! I worked in bridal registry before I was married, so I sort of developed a dishes crush. I would have 4-5 sets if space would allow it!
I have eight children, and it sometimes seems like we break a dish a day. Once a year we stock up on new bowls, plates, mugs from IKEA (like MountainMamma mentioned).
My mother used to collect pretty bowls and plates from the thrift store when I was a child. Rarely did two dishes match in the cupboard and table. She now has very expensive matching china, but I loved the mismatched dishes best. We are beginning our own thrift store dish collection this year because our dishes are vanishing so quickly.
i have 12 matching place settings we received as a wedding gift when we were married, and we use when we have company (fairly often and often still not enough). but for daily dishes for our family of 5 i mix and match my favorite thrift shop dishes…all themed “strawberry” which is the theme of my kitchen as well! i love that i have several different smaller sets, they are cheerful, ok to be broken (it happens often! with a 4 and 5 yo helping and a 2yo trying). i love the mismatched dishes look and the uniquenss of each one. and i am not a fan of a paperplates either… this works for us for now! though i have considered the corielle because even when those fall on our tile kitchen floor they break less often than ceramic.
I am also in need of plates. I want something that is durable. I have a family of 9 and we do use paper plates a LOT. I want something that is BPA free and such. I went to look at Ikea cause we do have one near by and they have thousands to pick from. Could you narrow that selection down to what you ladies are using, or did you buy sets? Thanks
i know it’s totally off.. but do you really think that paper plates ‘costs’ more than washing dishes 3 times a day? 🙂
We put away breakable dishes several years ago. We use plastic trays (think school lunch trays) or sectioned plates, plastic bowls, plastic cups. Period. The reason we switched is we turned dishes over to the kids – they wash, dry, put away, beginning at age 2. We even moved the dishes to under the counter instead of in high cabinets. I just didn’t have hands to do it all with so many babies right in a row. This kids had to step up. We’ve got eight kids so far and while I daydream of getting real dishes again I’m not willing or able to spend the money right now. So plastic it is. And I really can’t be bothered to worry about BPA right now (just being honest). I’m too busy cooking everything from scratch to work around our multiple food allergies. 😉
Do we ever use paper? Yep! When we have company we usually need more plates.
We have Corelle – which I really like, but they discontinued my pattern….and a couple girls have broken a couple dishes each, so we’re down to not that many (we’re a family of 6). I have 2 other sets of “good” dishes – if I have energy, I get those out of the china closet and use them for company. If not, paper it is.
We don’t have a dishwasher….I’ve asked for one, but hubby is quite content to spring for paper plates for everyday, too. So, when life gets tough, we get paper plates out. Other wise, I do try to use the Corelle. At some point, I really do want to get new, matching dishes – I don’t care if they’re Corelle, I just want a bunch of matching dishes!! Although, I like the idea of thrift shop- theme matched dishes…..maybe after I repaint the kitchen (and get some new wallpaper in some areas), I’ll go with that idea.
We have Corelle. I have the plain white ones because I like to have crazy table clothes. I have 12 settings, for a family of 6. I do use paper plates (or paper towels) when we have little friends over (that means anyone under 20). Otherwise we all use the regular dishes. There have been a few times when we have had large parties over and I buy heavier paper plates for that.
We also use Corelle. They are very light and durable! We bought a set of 8 several years ago and my mom just gave us her old set when she bought a new one. They don’t match, but we’re okay with that. lol My littlest ones use plastic dishes, but I have no problem with them using the corelle as well.
If we have tons of company, I’ll pick up some paper plates, but we have plenty of dishes for when grandparents visit.
Ours are ikea. And we use mason jars for cups, which were center pieces at my wedding 6 years ago. I break dishes like crazy. I am so clumsy. I think we spent 20-30$ fir 8 place settings at ikea. And they are smaller than today’s average size which I Ike because we eat less.
We have plastic-ware for the kids – tons. White dishware for special company, and Christmas dishes that were handed down to us and stay in storage until Christmas.
We have done home fellowship dinners for years, and I have to say that you rate VERY highly around here as company if you get the special white dinnerware :-). Most of the time when we get together for fellowship or with our friends, it is chinette (paper) plates and dixie cups with a sharpie marker. This also has to do with the fact that most of us have large families, and there would be no way to serve 40 people on our dinnerware!
I use and love Corelle, too. The plain white ones. They go with anything and are practically indestructible. I’ve even dropped them in my tile floor which usually shatters everything. My 23yo son requested a set of Corelle when he moved to his apartment. If we have several people, usually family for holidays, I buy Chinette.
I have eight Corell plates of two different patterns. We use them as every day dishes. I also have small plastic plates if we need them at breakfast. All of this I got from goodwill. Then I have 7 nice China plates (1 broke that’s why 7), that I use for nice dinners. Not just holidays but Sunday dinners too. I am looking for matching dishes and bowls to go with them.
My friend with 8 kids buys pewter. She says they cost s bit upfront but she never worries about them breaking and the little kids can put dishes away:)
