Gray is usually said to be the American spelling and grey is used more in the countries of the British Commomwealth. But, as far as I can tell, both are used just as frequently by both Americans and non-Americans. I find that I use both spellings depending on which one happens to be in my head at the time! Ha! Maybe it depends on what version of the spelling I have just recently seen? Not sure. But, whichever you choose, both are considered correct spellings.
Your hair is short so it will take you no time at all to grow it! I am growing mine out right now from a pixie cut (that I love but my husband does not prefer) and once it’s long I am dying it lavendar ombré with dark roots and like silvery platinum tips. I love playing with my hair. It is way less permanent than tattoos 🙂
It says gray for American, grey for Canadian/UK, but I’ve found in my experience it’s usually the opposite that I see. I am very particular about using Canadian spelling, but I use gray. Both are correct though!
My hair is longer now. Think a bob right above the ears. I’m growing it for dd7 who wants it long. I may go shorter again during the transition if need be.
Spelling – I always use grey, but both are correct.
Thanks for all the clarity everyone. Now, if I could ever start turning grey! Both my parents were in their 60 before they started and now my dad has a lovely silver head and my mom has very dull mouse grey hair now that is dreadfully thin. 🙁 I hope I take after my dad! I have always dreamed about having silver hair. I will wear it long if I get the crown of silver.
I am also particular about using Canadian spelling (which for some words allow a choice….) but I can never remember gray/grey when I want to (ie, which was which) although I do think that grey is the Canadian/UK spelling. It is the one that looks better to me too.
When I was young, maybe 4ish, a hair dresser just raved over the natural highlights in my hair. She told me to never dye my hair, so I never have and never plan to. A number of years ago I was getting my hair cut at a beauty school, and the student called over the teacher…. apparently I had some specific level of ‘virgin hair’ – as in hardly any buildup of anything on it…. and they asked if they could please do some cuts specifically to keep some for students to practicing things like dying etc on it. (It didn’t change the haircut or anything.)
I was blonde, my hair has slowly darkened. I am in my 40’s, and I haven’t yet noticed any actual grey – I do wish my hair was more blonde like it used to be. I really hope it turns a nice silver when it does go. My dh’s beard is now grey….
I went grey so young that I never even considered letting it stay that way and even with hindsight, I’m not sure I would have left it grey then, but I’m certainly ready now.
I did the same thing about 5 years ago, Christie. I had blonde hair until I had my first baby and it turned brown. Then it started going gray and I hated it so started doing highlights. A few years later I realized that I had enough highlights around my face from the gray to lighten up my face, so I quit the dye. What a relief!
I really like the wisdom quote, and I especially appreciated crazy4boys comments.
