Lindsey – I just stumbled across this post and SO sympathize with you. While my mom IS remarried and DOES cook, she sounds JUST like your mom. She does not want homemade, she does not want thoughtful – she wants expensive. So… her latest obsession is Pottery Barn and she was coming to our house on Christmas Eve and I had made her a photo calendar (that I make for all our family members each year and EVERYONE is so kind and rave about them, but she never did and so I didn’t make her one the previous year and then she lamented to my sister how I didn’t make her one!!!) so I RESUMED making her one this year and then I got something else small – don’t remember what, but on Christmas Eve, I saw this set of 12 pottery barn Christmas Appetizer plates for sale on a facebook second hand group – still in the box. They were SUPER cheap – I think maybe $20 for all 12 – so I sent my husband to pick them up on his way home from work and he brought them in while she was here and snuck them upstairs so I could wrap them and when I gave them to her, she went on and on about how much she liked them, and how she hadn’t seen them at Pottery Barn and how special it was that I got her “vintage” Pottery barn!!! Wheh – now THAT was a blessing from God for me because he saved me from disappointing my mother with another gift that was inadequate by her standards. I’m still praying that God changes her heart about such things, but in the meantime I am SO grateful for the way he blessed me with that silly second hand gift this Christmas – so don’t forget to add the next holiday to your prayer list when it comes to your mom. (And in the meantime, I’m search craigslist for pottery barn castoffs!)
