We are about to leave for a lengthy vacation and I would love to hear your family’s way of keeping close to our Father while on vacation and away from your usual routine. Our mornings always start with scripture memory and a devotional. A bible reading and discussion is held sometime during the day or at bedtime. Pretty standard I guress….
Do you do anything different away from home? I am looking for some creative thoughts to bring Christ into our day while on vacation. Our favorite way to be close to the Lord is through learning about his Creation so I have already packed a sea shell ID guide, colored pencils, paper, etc. (Nature study is our favorite.)
Any other ideas? I am definitely looking forward to bible readings on the beach….but what else?
Maybe a special before bed reading in scripture to close out the day? Or a time of prayer simply thanking God for the blessings of that special day of vacation at the end of the day?
We always bring our scriptures and continue our morning devotional, which is helpful to keep the kids feeling grounded in some ‘normal’ even when things are out of the normal routine.
Thank you Tristan. Thank you for reminding me to thank Him for the blessing of a vacation. My husband usually prays over us all at bedtime and I know he will remember, thank goodness.
We bring along our devotionals or books. Then around a camp fire or in a hotel we just spend a bit of time talking about our day the many blessings He brought (&/OR surprises) and read a bible story. We keep it simple for structure and enjoy!
In the past, we have sung hymns together in the car from Hymns for A Kid’s Heart DVD and book. It is an especially sweet time of sinning these beautiful hymns together.
We were just gone on a three-week RV trip. During our vacation, we kept close to God through prayer, Scripture memory, and by visiting a few places of worship. We are Catholic, and we:
-went to mass while we were in Gettysburg (we just looked for a local parish and went to one of their Sunday masses) -visited the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine in Emmitsburg, MD -went to mass at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC -toured the Francisan Monastery’s Holy Land while in DC
Since you are ready to explore sea shells, you might enjoy the Legend of the Sand Dollar. You could just print out a version from online (traditioninaction.org looks good). If sand dollars are not common to the area you still might find one in a souvenir shop, and I’ve seen the legend on postcards.
