Our family is hosting 3 young growing (I’m sure very hungry) men for 2 weeks coming up. They are part of our churches new youth program. We are very excited to host them but with 3 more mouths to feed and a tight budget already I need help. I tried to look up past posts about meals and feeding families but either I am not computer savy or I just didn’t use the right key words.
They are living with us for 2 weeks. Being we live 40 minutes from church I am not even sure they will be able to eat breakfast with us. Also, I know that they will not eat lunch with us at all, and dinner is probably not going to happen most nights as they (obviously) stay at church most nights to help with various activities with the youth.
So the jist of it is this: They have a fridge/freezer and microwave available to them within the church to use. What do I pack for them for 3 meals a day? Snacks I don’t have to worry about so much as the church members always seem to be leaving goodies for them. Ideally I would like to make a big dinner than I can send with them for the next day for one meal, and then what? I have not really ever had to make breakfast for on the go. Sandwhiches for lunch? So here are some of my ideas: bagels, sandwhiches, spag., soups (I am thinking LOTS of soups), taco’s… then I am lost as to things I can make for dinner that will travel well.
Would love your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks Misty
What about a crock pot meal? Send a crock pot to the church with the ingredients in the insert and tell them to plug it in and set it on low or high. Then send containers and they can pack up the leftovers to put in the fridge for the next day, bring the crock pot home, and two days later you send it back filled to cook again. We do chicken, soups, roast with veggies, or even bake potatoes (do a baked potato bar with them) all in the crock pot. BBQ some meat for shredded sandwiches in it, or layer in a taco/burrito dish.
On-the-go breakfast equals fruit and toaster items in our house. Usually seed bread or GF waffles with fruit spread or nut butter. And always tons of fresh fruit.
We used to do fishing charters and I would often send the fishermen out with fruit smoothies in the morning, along with their coffee. And then some cheese and crackers and (yet more) fruit for a snack. They were usually back at the dock for lunch.
I love Tristan’s idea with the crockpot – easy on you both with time/prep and budget, too! 😉
I also was thinking crock pot ideas.. my fear is that there is actually 10 of these missionaries and they would all eat the meals daily instead of saving them? Hmm have to work that one out..
Smoothies is a great one! crackers and cheese also and could just buy a box and have them take it for a couple days.
