@Linabean, Baking soda is a very mild abrasive. I wonder if it just works a little better when it’s moist. It would be interesting to try baking soda and water to see if it cleans just as well in that situation. If not, then maybe the action of the bubbles is helpful in some way.

Thanks for responding, Doug. I thought that it may just be that it is the abrasive as well. I have tried each vinegar and baking soda just on its own with a wet cloth or scrub brush but they don’t work as well as when I sprinkle the b.s. on first and then spray the vinegar over that and then scrub right away. Maybe it’s the timing? Like you said, something about the bubbles? I understand about the alkaline vs. the acid and that they sort of cancel each other out. So what you said makes sense to me. I was just wondering how it then does such a good job of getting rid of the bathtub ring and making it all shiny! Hehe! I like understanding how my cleaners work, since I make them mostly at home and it helps to know these things for coming up with new recipes ,etc.

Thanks again for responding to my somewhat silly question! : )

I clean our sinks and showers with just baking soda and water…it works very well for getting up soap scum.
