One of my kids has been taking piano for 3 years – using a piano with non-weighted keys.  When she plays at competions/recitals she has a very hard time making the switch to pianos with weighted keys.  Does anyone know if this is common?  Should we purchase a digital piano with weighted keys?

    Thanks in advance!

Yes it is common and yes she needs weighted keys. In fact, when I had my piano studio (my major was piano) I required my students to have an instrument with weighted keys. Not having them adversely affected their technique.

Thanks Robin!  Very helpful to know.

Yes, I would recommend a keyboard with weighted keys as well. It is very hard to switch back and forth IMO.

Definitely!  You will have to pay a little more for a really good quality one, but it is more than worth it.

Does anyone use a digital piano in thier home?  If yes, what kind do you have?

I have an old Clavinova CLP 801 (or 810? I can’t remember!).  It’s 17 years old, been through 3 moves and is just now starting to give me trouble.  I think I paid $3000 way back in the day when I got it.  I checked on a replacement, and the one I want (a little upgrade) is $4500 – I’ll need to put up with my old one for a while, I think.  🙁

I prefer a real piano.  But, for cost and convenience (no tunings & they usually can record, which is very helpful to me as an accompanist), I think a digital piano is the way to go for most people.

We have a digital piano, a real piano, and an organ.  🙂  All good for various uses.  Depends on what the musician wants/needs.  This worked well for us.  We also have a son who has multiple guitars of various kinds.  I think my kids like variety.  🙂
