What programs do you allow your dc to watch for educational purposes on sick days or in the early morning? We have been allowing our dc to watch Wild Kratts, and they love it, but are looking for something else. I could get a dvd series but am looking for something on Netflix or a program we can record first.
These aren’t educational, but my kids enjoy Angelina Ballerina and Kipper. They also like Wild Kratts. Angelina and Kipper are so sweet and innocent, in my opinion, even if they are a bit preschool-y for my older children. My kids don’t realize that they’re probably too old for those shows.
Leave It to Beaver is another one they enjoy. Actually we all like it! Sometimes they really want to watch Sid the Science Kid or Word Girl, and I will give in VERY occasionally.
Other suggestions:
Survivorman Discovery’s Raging Planet series lots of National Geographic shows Curious George Mythbusters How It’s Made Discovery’s Shark Week Out of the Wild: the Alaska Experiment (some bleeping of curse words here, if I remember)
We don’t allow TV in the mornings, except on Saturdays, sometimes. Most shows they watch are in the evening as a treat and on Sunday afternoons while we’re resting. Of course if anyone is sick, the TV is on a lot more too.
I did go on Netflix and searched out some, but I had a feeling some of you mamas would already have some favorites.
@Lindsey, we have mornings where our dc wake at 5am and need something quiet to do and reading isn’t priority at that time of the day. My dh needs a list of Netflix/recorded programs to let the dc watch before I’m ready for them or he’ll give in to Spongebob. He enjoys all kinds of nature/science-y programs that they all watch together in the evening but he doesn’t think of those things for the kiddos to watch when he’s trying to get ready for work. But they have to be up before the chickens, which we don’t have, to watch something on tv on a school day. LOL.
They like watching 19 and Counting, Duggars with me. They have 10 seasons on now. They had only 2 seasons on a few years ago.
I subscribed to Amazon Prime also for $79 per year just so they can watch Mister Rogers (and I like to re -visit my childhood and watch with them sometimes). They are learning so many good things. They regularly say “I saw that on Mister Rogers”. They are learning character lessons, how to deal with their feelings, how things are made, etc. I counted about 350 episodes on there. There are also some free online at pbskids, but we have not seen those yet. As a bonus I get free 2 day shipping at Amazon and my order does not have to be $25. Of course there are more shows and movies to watch and many, but not all, are the same as Netflix.
Another reason to get Amazon prime! I loved Mr. Rogers when I was a kid, too. We did watch Leave it to Beaver earlier today and have a great list for my family. We’re all under the weather and needed some new programs to watch.
