I have a question with those who have little girls (or big ones) that have gone through the ear piercing life change.

Our daughter 4 yrs got her ears pierced 3 months ago.  We went with the pure white gold to avoid any allergy questions that might arrise.  They did a wonderful and sterile job in putting the earings in and sanitizing her hands and wearing gloves.  I have no issues there that everything wasn’t 100% clean.

But still at as I said 3 months there are days when they bleed and get a white puss that comes out.  I have done the cleaning every day 3 times a day up to the 2 month mark.  Then I went to 2 times a day.  I called about this back to the ear piercing place and they sugggested I take them out, soak in alchol and then once they are clean use the ear cleaing solution to re-clean them (as not to get the alchol in the ear which will dry them out was there comment) and then clean as usual.

Yet still we have a bit of puss and blood from time to time.  Not all the time mind you but once in awhile it will happen and then it’s like this for a couple days before it “seems” like it’s healed up.

What are your thoughts and comments?  Thanks, after all this I don’t want to tell her she has to get rid of them she’d be devistated as she loves them and was such a big girl when she got them.  Also, she got them for being dry for a month in a row through the night with no accidents.  She earned it.  But if I have to I guess I have to be the big bad mommyCry.

    Thanks again. Misty

Misty, we pierced our dd’s ears twice. They never became infected the way you’re describing, but the holes stretched out over time, and we were afraid it was going to tear through her ear lobes. It was especially worse on the right side. We don’t know if she was playing with them at night and stretching them out, but it’s possible. I regret having them pierced at all. The first time was my decision; the second time was because she wanted them. I wish I had waited until she wanted them rather than going through it twice and still not having earrings. The stretched holes have not healed, although we have never tried to put an earring back through them. We probably won’t ever try again.

Similarly, I had my nose pierced twice (I know, I know, not typical for a homeschooling momma). The first time I had to take it out because we moved so my dh could attend Bible college, and it was against campus rules to have piercings other than ears for women. (We personally do not have any reasons why piercings are unbiblical, but this school was very conservative and Pentecostal in nature, and we desired to follow the rules.) As soon as he graduated and we moved off campus, I re-pierced my nose. I actually loved having that small speck of sparkle on the right side of my nose. The piercing did fine until it had been in for nearly a year. Then I started getting what appeared to be a large pimple right around the piercing. Despite cleaning it and keeping make up away from it, that pimple came and went for over a month. It was painful too. One day while taking a shower, I had had enough and yanked it out. Within 24 hours the hole was completely grown in, the pimple was healed, and I decided that it was time for me to outgrow my nose piercing. Laughing

All that to say that with piercings, it’s totally possible to do everything right and still have to take them out. I’m sorry for your dd. She did earn it, and perhaps you can reward her with something else that makes her feel big and special.

    Blessings,

    Lindsey

I don’t know that it’s unusual to have that occasionally for some time.  It takes a long time until pierced ears heal completely.  Did they tell you to have her rotate the earings in her ears many times a day? As in just twisting them around and around?

Sorry I can’t be more help, but I don’t think it’s that abnormal or worrisome.

My dd had similar issues after having her ears pierced at around age 4. She would run screaming from me when it was time to clean and twist them every night:( We finally just let them close up. Then a few years later we did them again, but w/14 kt gold. Now that’s all she can wear w/o trouble. I’m not familar w/white gold or if that makes a difference…

    Ears are weird.

When I was a kid, I had problems with my ears getting infected every now and then (pus and guck) and eventually had to go to wearing only 18K gold earrings.  One time my ears were so bad that my dad soaked my ears in iodine and made loops out of “cat gut” (fishing line I think, but we called it cat gut overseas) and I wore those until my ears “dried out”.  As I aged, my ears changed and I can wear anything anytime and no problems at all.

My oldest got her ears pierced and didn’t have a problem with them at all.

My youngest got her ears pierced, and oh my.  Pus, blood blisters in the back, “knots” in the ear hole (like a hard spot in the ear when you pressed on the hole area).  We struggled for a year and finally took them out.  They closed up, healed perfectly with no remnants of knots or anything.  I told her that if she really wanted them, we could try again when she was a teenager (she’s 7 now).  I think if I did them again, I would find a place that pierced with a needle as opposed to the gun, and I would have her only wear gold.

Check your white gold too – most of these metals are alloys, so there is always the possibility of an allergy.

Thanks ladies.  I have thought about getting some type of K gold earings.  They don’t bother her and it doesn’t hurt when I clean them.  I do rotate when I clean them but not other than that.  I could try that also.  Thanks for sharing your experiences with me.  I will give it some more time.

I’m not sure what white gold is dipped in to make it “white”, but it is dipped into something.  You may want to research it online.  I used to have a white gold ring that would turn yellowish after a while and it had to be “dipped” at the jewelry store to make it turn white again.  She may be allergic to whatever chemical (or metal) that is.

Oh, I just found this article about white gold and it talks about allergies!!  It says white gold has a rhodium coating.

I didn’t read all the comments, but this happened with our dd at age 4 also.  Finally after a year, the ped. gave me some ointment to dip the earring in then put it in the hole, so the med got in the ear hole.  This worked but we had to continue to do it or they got gross and painful again.  I knew this wasn’t normal and we found a internet site that sells earrings for people who are allergic to them.  http://www.sensitively-yours.com/     This was a miracle for us.  I cannot describe the amout of screaming that occured for a year with getting her ears pierced.  I would recommend trying these, it worked  They are only about $5-8 a pair and shipping is reasonable and fast.   About once a month we still clean her ears and earrings with alcohol, and she takes them out each night.  Now, these earrings look cheap to an adult, but to her at age 8, she isn’t aware of that.  I hope this helps and good luck. Sorry if this was choppy, the kids are going crazy this morning.

thank you to both of you.  I will look at them and being allergy free might be my best bet!

You could also clean them well with alcohol and dip in an antibiotic ointment to help get the meds where needed.

I just looked at the earing s and can’t wait to order.  I think this is my best bet to start with.  If all goes well and her ears clear up completely we’ll try 24K with the correct posts but ether way these new earings will be a hit!
