I don’t know a lot. They are often organized on college campuses. Once when we visited a campus they had organized a medieval swordfight They were always present at the Renaissance fairs I attended growing up. They look like a fun bunch but I can’t vouch for them always being kid friendly if that is what you want to know. Try attending a Renaissance fair–there will almost certainly be SCA folk there, then ask them any questions you have.
Thanks. I know there is a local group and their Web Site talks about activities for families and children. I thought perhaps someone here might have some first had experience to share.
Both hubby and I used to be involved in it years ago… I can’t speak for all SCA clubs, but the ones we were involved in at least, I would NEVER recommend children/teens getting involved with. The word of the day was debauchery. It’s definitely something you could do as a family, though.
There are a lot of cool things that they do, like making chain mail, learning and teaching sword fighting, attending the renaissance festivals, etc., but you could probably find another way to participate in those activities. The renaissance is such a popular time period, that there are sure to be clubs and classes available. I know you’re in Canada, and it may be different there, but our local library and colleges offer classes for all ages, and usually when it’s Ren Faire time, they’ll be renaissance-y in nature.
If you decide to look into the SCA more, I would suggest contacting them, attending a few of their meetings and banquets (it should be free to attend if you’re deciding on whether to become members), and then deciding whether you feel like it’s a fit for your family. It can be really fun, but I would definitely suggest entering in with eyes wide open.
