We already have a ton of books, but I’d still like to give my dc something to read at Christmastime, to add to their collections. In the past, we’ve given them Lamplighter books and an audio book or two. If you are giving the gift of books this year, would you share your ideas? I’m looking for something to encourage their walk with Christ or fictional books. My dc are 15, 11 and 8.
I second the Kindgom Series as well as the Knights of Arrethtrae, by the same author. My son (almost 9) isn’t a big reader on his own, but I did these as read-alouds. They are also loving the Viking Quest series by Lois Walfrid Johnson. I read the first one aloud w/ the intention of him reading the rest on his own; however, they were so good myself and 6 y.o. daughter wanted to find out what happened, so we are reading them all together.
Anything for a high school student?? I’m thinking even if it’s fiction, but a nice looking book, he can add to his “collection”. Also, maybe something to feed his soul/character? We have the Bob Schultz books and are beginning the Ralph Moody books soon. He may be a bit old for the Moody books, but I think they’re good and I don’t want him to miss out on them.
I definitely think the Chuck Black books could be for high school boys. We just happened to read them young, but I do think the audience intended was older. I enjoyed them so much for their allegorical content and great Biblical themes…some things an older student would get that the younger ones would miss. Also Wayne Thomas Batson has some books. The trilogy we read was The Door Within…the main character is a high school boy.
Our son LOVES JM Cremp! He about wears the catalog out when it comes in the mail, dreaming up ideas :)) I have an extra copy of The Dangerous Book for Boys by Iggulden for sale if anyone is interested. This is another of our son’s favorites. I understand they now opened a JM Cremp store in the Mall of America in the Twin Cities, MN. Blessings,Melissa
What about Frank Peretti or Ted Dekker? Both are Christian authors with a lot of character and Bible in their writings, and they’re fascinating authors. A lot of allegory integrated into their stories. There are books directed at both older youth and adults, and some kids’ series.
