My two girls are ages 6 and 9. I would like to get them some very basic Legos without spending a fortune. I’m a little leery of used ones, but I’ll start checking the thrift stores in our area. I just wondered if there is a clearinghouse that anyone knows of? Maybe a place online that sells overstocks or items that were not very popular at the stores? I know it’s a long-shot, but thought I’d try…

    TIA,

Not that I’m aware of.  I have found the best deals around Christmas or Black Friday.  At Walmart last year they had basic sets of 250 (maybe it was more?) for $15.  Whatever it was I was literally jumping up and down and bought 3 boxes.

We sometimes find them at garage sales, but not often.  I hope someone has a great inexpensive place ’cause I could use it too!

I know you said you’re not thrilled about used, but I buy ours in bulk on Craig’s List. I dump them in the bath tub with hot water and dish soap, wash, and lay on a towel to dry. Saves a lot of money!

EBAY – Look for the bulk lots. At Christmas I buy several bulk lots for my boys, and I pay about 50% of new. They are usually sold by a company that sanitized them ;0).

Other than that, you are stuck with the ‘sticker’ price – and it is unbelievable how high they are!

Yep, we’ve spent quite a bit on Legos.  We always have the boys add them to birthday/Christmas lists to help.  We’ve looked in thrift stores but haven’t found any with low enough prices to buy them.

    Good luck!

If you are concerned about germs, add some bleach or its equivalent to the water when you are soaking them in the tub. Just rinse them really well after their soak. Works wonders. =)

I got a crazy good deal on huge lego sets from homeschool buyers co-op.

We also got our large set at a Black Friday sale…Walmart had a huge, basic set for $30.  My DC have also had some of the generic sets and I can’t tell the difference.
