Do you allow sugar-free gym? My 13yo is writing her first persuasive essay and chose to write on why its ok to chew it. Ugh. I think aspartame is harmful, though honestly don’t know how much is absorbed in a piece of gum with less than 2% of it. The research sounds like its ok. I want to value her work. I’ve asked her if she’d eat a brownie with less than 2% dog poop to make a point, but she of course thinks that’s different:) I definitely don’t allow sugar-free drinks and food. The gum had just been a sore spot. She doesn’t care for the xylitol or sorbitol gums because the flavor doesn’t last very long.
We allow splurges, but overall I’m a grass-fed, organic, make my own cleaning supplies type of person, so this just doesn’t fly well with me. Just wondering what others do:) Thanks! Gina
We like a brand called Pur. It’s aspartame-free. The flavor doesn’t last long, but one of my children has severe PTSD and chewing gum helps regulate him and this gum has been a blessing, as far as gum goes. 🙂
I love sugar free gum, but it is the only sugar free thing we eat and we do that in moderation.
I think it’s pretty cool that she chose to write her persuasive paper to personally persuade YOU on an issue! You can really help her fine tune her argument since you are taking the opposing view; and you can celebrate the fact that she has her own opinion. She needs to respect her authority, but she can respectfully disagree, right?
By the way, are you using Jump In Writing? We just did the same type of paper – kids loved it!
No sugar-free gum here unless it’s xylichew-which is the xylitol one. My SPD also does better when she’s chewing it. Another option could be ginger chews-not really gum not sugar-free, but they use straight cane sugar, which is fine with me as long as they brush their teeth as usual and it’s not a daily habit. MIne really like these:
Plus, it’s not just the aspartame but other preservatives and colorings.
You can also chew on other things, like pine needles and Neem sticks. I always want it to be something that assists digestion-not tricking the digestion.
No Aspartame nothing here! Never liked the idea of it and even less now that I know it is yet another GMO. I was also buying Xylotol gum and just realized it has soy lecithin in it. Will have to find something else or just forget it!!
Ditto, here. Absolutely no aspartame in any shape or form. We chew Glee Gum. We get it for $1 a pack from our local EarthFare. They have natural cane sugar and xylitol (sugar free) kind. Azure has a xylitol gum from a company I can’t remember at the moment that I want to research and maybe try also. We allow the kids a couple of pieces maybe once a week or so.
Jenny…mint leaves, I must say that’s a new one!!! We get them for free from our CSA during season, but we’re not doing it this year because of lots of travels this summer. Will definitely try to remember that one!
Britney….Glee gum……how long does the flavor last? Flavor not lasting long is her main issue w/the Spry and sorbitol gums I usually buy.
ServingwithJoy, I’ve given in a bit w/moderation….mainly letting them have a few pieces on vacations or special occasions. But their closest friends are always offering/have it around:( We’re using Write with the Best, but I’m considering looking at Jump In. WWtB has been great, a breath of fresh air after our last program. But lately she says she hates writing. I don’t know if switching programs would matter or not. Do your kids enjoy Jump In? I wish I could flip through a book. We’ve made it so far w/WWtB I hate to drop it….she might not like essay writing no matter what!!!
Thanks all for sharing! I know I’m not alone in not wanting anything to do w/aspartame…but does anybody have a good link to share? I know I’m the mom and get to make the final call, but w/aging kids it’s getting tougher….if I don’t provide solid reasons, I’m afraid they’ll doubt other food choices I make. Hubby isn’t sold on organic, natural eating and even her God’s World News just had an article saying organics were basically no healthier…..ugh! Blessings, Gina
And here’s some more news (and an action request) to make us all feel real good tonight and to remind us to look for that farmer for our milk instead of buying from the store, if not now, in the near future:
