I have been sprouting Mung beans and Alfafa for years, I would like to try some more. Which ones are easy? I have tried brocoli seeds but they spoil before they are ready every single time.

Have not tried lentils, will probably try next.

I bought a mix from Whole foods. It says to wash the seeds w/bleach to prevent e-coli. I knoe e-coli is pretty bad but washing food w/bleach!?! Not sure I want to do that!

I never wash mine in bleach, but then again we drink raw milk so I guess I’m just not that food safety consious!  🙂

If you’re really concerned, you could probably leave them out in the sunshine for the day – put them on a tray in a single layer on your dash board – I would guess between the heat from being in the car and the rays from the sun it would kill any nasties.

Also – nourishing traditions and the Whole Foods cook book from La Leche give information about sprouting – it turns out that alfalfa – the most popular sprout – is not particularly healthy and that sprouts should be lightly steamed for best assimilation.  That’s all I can remember off the top of my head, but I’m sure I read it in Nourishing Traditions if you want to know more.

Buckwheat groats are my favorite. More of a grain then a seed i guess. Good on their own for a meal not just to use in other things (with some oil & flavoring of course). I will be having a bowl for lunch today!

    Never heard that about alfafa.

I’ll try to find a way to put the seeds in the sun…

Funny I have LLL Whole food cookbook but never think to look there for sprouts info!!

    thank you!
