I had foot surgery last Friday. I was put in a cast on Monday. I have been itching INSANELY since they put the cast on – anywhere that the cast is! Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop the itching. I can’t take anything like Benadryl. Thank you!
Well, I know now not to stick pencils down between your cast and your skin, because pencils break, and then you need to explain to the doctor how a pencil wound up there…
My mother used to use a knitting needle to scratch. The pencil may have been embarrassing, but I’m sure the doctor has seen much more bizzar things than that!
BTW, I don’t think it’s likely to be an actual allergy. I hear horror stories about itching from just about everyone who has had a cast on. DD14 had a cast on her arm for just a few weeks back when she was 12, and the itching drove her nuts. She said it got a little more tolerable after awhile, but she says she just tried harder to ignore it!
I actually have a rash with blisters in the part that I can see. I am allergic to nylon. The doc said today that it has nylon in it (the part on my skin). But he doesn’t know of an alternative. So… I’m still looking for itch relief.
You poor thing! I didn’t know casts had nylon in them, but that makes sense with that “stretchy stuff” they layer on when they apply it. You would think there would be some sort of alternative, though. I guess prayer is the only answer I have now, so I will pray!
Oh, and I’m sorry if I came off sounding like a know-it-all, saying it wasn’t an allergy….just shows you how much I really do know, and today I guess it wasn’t all that much, LOL!
Sue, you didn’t sound like a know it all – at all. When he put it on he said it was a cotton. But today I was told it had nylon in it. Sigh. Thank you so much for your prayers. I wasn’t sure I wasn going to make it thru the day today. There is a blizzard coming our way – maybe the cooler tempatures will help.
