Curious as to how many books you have going at one time? I’m trying to organize my reading life and be more intentional with it. I like the idea of three books going at one time…one for devotional/spiritual development, one non-fiction, and one fiction. Is this the general “rule to follow” if wanting to read more than one book at a time? Wanting to make reading more of a priority in my life and trying to figure out the best way to do so. This is a behavior I’m really trying to model more of for my kids.
I am interested in this topic too! I signed the kids up for the summer reading program at the library, and this year, they have one for adults. We’re challenged to read five books of different genres through July 30. I usually don’t read much fiction, but kind of excited to do so. I’d love to see how others manage their reading lists.
I did hear once about a woman who had five books from five different genres going at a time, and she would read each of them once a week. (So, Monday would be her novel, Tuesday would be her spiritual growth book, Wednesday would be her nonfiction, etc.)
It would be good for me. I tend to read a lot of nonfiction/spiritual growth, but not much else.
I’m not nearly so organized about it. I read a lot and generally have 1-2 nonfiction books going slowly over a month or two, with lots of fiction at the same time. For perspective, this year I’ve completed 59 books since January. But in that time I’ve only completed 2 nonfiction books and have 3 I’m working on reading.
What is currently working for me is a theology/Christian growth type book in the morning, homeschooling/nonfiction during the day, and fiction at night. Although depending on my fiction…it sometimes becomes all day! 😉 My three books right now are Gospel Treason by Brad Bigby, Teaching From Rest (because apparently I can read this book constantly), and The Endless Steppe.
I’m usually reading several books at once. Some are books I’m prereading before I hand them over to my daughter so that we can discuss them. Those are biographies or historical narratives or nonfiction Christian books usually. Sometimes they are classics as well.
My personal reading time is at night when everyone is in bed. I usually read for about an hour and it depends on how I’m feeling as to what I read. Sometimes, it’s a classic. Other times it’s nonfiction Christian or books on education. I always have a Christian fiction book going as well. I really like historical fiction. I usually have 5-10 books going at any given time. However I may not pick some of them up for weeks and then just read a chapter here and there.
