I’m not techy enough to figure out how this can happen on-line, so maybe someone could explain this to me.  We had an order come into our Kindle for a book that was clearly very inappropriate.  In order to get into our Amazon account, someone would have had to order it from our desktop computer from my account or know the password (nobody does).  Even then, my account is protected by Net Nanny and they would have had to know my admin password to get access (I think?).  In addition, our computers are all totally in the open and the day it was ordered we were all at home together all day, so as far as I know there was no opportunity for anyone to have enough privacy to order something like that without someone else seeing.  Our adult son is living at home, so initially I suspected him (disappointing, but understanding our fallenness) however he says he didn’t do it.  I’m inclined to believe him because he may not like getting caught in sin, but he’s the type to confess if he is.  Also, if he was going to do it I think he’d know enough to not send it to the family Kindle!!  Also, there is the aforementioned Net Nanny and I think you’d have to have the override password to get around that.  Okay, this may all be clear as mud, but I hope I’ve explained it correctly.  Am I missing something?  Is there a way to figure out how that got ordered?

I would contact Amazon and get as much information about it as you can. My daughter’s kindle was registered to my Amazon account, so I receive an email every time something is purchased, even if it is free. Once, my youngest was playing a game on her sister’s kindle and purchased several items related to this game without realizing it (long story, but the game had really deceptive marketing practices). I happened to be on the computer at the time & immediately contacted Amazon by phone. They reversed all of the charges, deleted the game app, and were very understanding about the fact that it was a mistake.

ETA: I don’t know how much they can tell you about how it got ordered, but hopefully they can help.

Thanks Sue.  All that I am able to ascertain from looking at the order is the day it was ordered.  It was very easy to get rid of the book and have Amazon reverse the charges.  I just don’t want to be naive about how someone could access something like that from my computer or if there could be a way that nobody did it, kwim?  If any of my sons are searching for that type of thing on-line I’d like to know how it could happen with all the safeguards we have in place.  Most importantly, I want the opportunity to deal with the heart issues that go along with seeking that type of information, but first I need to know if it’s possible that nobody did it.  Can that type of thing just appear?

I once had a book ordered on my kindle and there was NO WAY any of our children did it, as we were away and they had no access to computers. We were camping with no internet and no devices. My kindle was at home. I called Amazon and they reversed it, but they said it is easy for someone to breach if I have one-click turned on (which I did at the time).

I am guilty of using the same password across multiple sites, and they said it could have been a program that people use to hack into people’s emails. Not really a real person, but someone who uses one of those hacking deals to access people’s accounts.

If you have one-click turned on, I would suggest you turning it off. Since I did that, this has never happened again. HTH
