My oldest three children have graduated and I still have three I am schooling. My daughter will be in the 11th grade this year and has previously done MFW for 9th and 10th grade. This year I would like to use what I have and make it more CM. She will be doing Early American for History….from the time of the explorers to right before the Civil War. I am so torn on what to use. I have considered Module 5 but I have so many resources on my book shelf already and would like to use them if possible.
I see in Module 5 that Charles Coffin’s book….The Boy’s of 76 is one of the resources used. I have The Story of Liberty and Sweet Land of Liberty that I am considering using as her main history reading. I also have the set of Basic History of United States by Clarence B. Carson I’ve considered but I think my daughter would enjoy the writing style of Coffin better.
I would love to hear opinions on using Coffin’s books.
If you have books that will cover each time period, go for it. She could just read, narrate, and write about each topic. We have found the read-discuss-write cycle to be very effective.
My 11th grader used the American History by Era series this year. She read, wrote summaries or outlines, and then wrote an essay after each book.
What about buying the Simply Charlotte Mason planner book to help you plan schedules for using what you already have??? I’m always for using what you have if it’s good.
Coffin’s books are great. They are much more interesting reading than Carson. Much, much more interesting reading. 🙂 I love Carson’s perspective, and I love history, but the books put me to sleep. 🙂
Sixtiemom, the resource Tristan mentioned is simply a wonderful tool to help plan whatever you choose to use. There are no other resources to buy. It simply helps you in putting it all together. I highly recommend it, ESP. if you’re doing your own thing. It breaks it down and makes it all doable.
Yep, that’s the one! I love it. Right now I’m writing my own history curriculum for the coming school year centered around Church history from 1800-1900 and the Planning Your Charlotte Mason Education is making it easy to see when we’ll finish each book in the spine (We’re using The Work and the Glory, a 9 book historical fiction series that is really well done). I’m able to line up non-fiction books to correspond to each spine book and know when we’ll need to start each book ,when we’ll finish each, and how much to read each day. Love llove love it!
That teaches me to make sure I read every word….hahaha! I actually have the planner and am working through it. This is where I got stuck….recording the resources I was going to use for history. It’s been very helpful so far.
I just have a problem figuring out which resources to use….I tend to want to over do it and use everything I have. This is helping me find the balance.
