has anyone used these maerials, and if so, did you like them? Would you recommend this curricula for a 13 year old boy with spelling/handwriting issues? We are plugging our way through the Barton Spelling and Reading system to help with the spelling. They recommend this writing course after level 4, what do you think?
Absolutely love it! Ideal in this situation with some minor adjustments like having him dictate to you, then copy it down for himself if necessary until his spelling and handwriting (or, I’d suggest keyboarding) are more comfortable.
I’m short on time, but wanted to give IEW a two thumbs up!
Btw, some of the theme based writing lessons coordinate well with SCM history modules.
Thank you for your input TailorMade, I just want to find something good and stick with it; and I value the wisdom of all the experts here at SCM! This is our second year, and I feel lke we have not done enough writing ( my fault, trying to avoid the conflict and complaining). Do you think it could count as a legitamate “English Unit ” as far as most highschool graduation requirements go? (will continue the Barton for an additional year at least).
I’d say that literature would need to bs added for a traditional credit. Maybe others might shed light on what constitutes an English credit for highschool.
I agree about the literature, but what IEW materials are you talking about? I think the SWI DVD course on it’s own would definitely not be a “course” but the SICC DVD course or a whole theme-based book (along with lit) definitely would be. And at some point, vocab/roots and grammar should be included.
Just checked in! We were looking at a whole theme-based book such as American History. I looked at some sample pages and liked how it included vocabulary lists and some grammar as well. We arre burned out on Easy Grammar, so I thought this might be a good change. The barton system also has quite a bit of grammar included in its lessons as well. Maybe we could add a Daily Gram to supplement? Literature is also a weak area as ds struggles reading comprehension. We (kids) read Proverbs out loud daily, but have not dived deep into a formal literature “class”. We also read at night (mom and dad out loud) but this is more like our evening entertainment (ie fun book sereies kids are into at the time, not likely used in public schools!) We will take any suggestions. We are still figuring this out as we go, and I really don’t want to miss anything that might hurt his chances for college, just in case he decides to give it a try. Thanks again!
