I’m trying to clean off my shelves and have some books that I’m trying to figure out if they are worth keeping and/or assigning to my kids to read. Does anyone have any info for these books?
The Black Pearl -O’Dell The Great Gatsby -Fitzgerald I Heard the Owl Call My Name -Craven The Great Gilly Hopkins -Paterson Taking Care of Terrific -Lowry LM Montgomery books other than Anne of Green Gables and Emily of New Moon series
I forget the ages of your children, but I would keep the Great Gatsby for the older high school years.
I found the themes to be universal and timeless – the desires of this world to fill one’s life with material possessions to find fulfillment but how in the end, it doesn’t work. Relationships and love are also based on material wealth and status. Although there is a definite time period for the setting (1920’s I believe) it seems that there truly is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes) for we find these same things to be true in our world today.
I think it is great for discussion, especially when contrasted with the Bible. It is kind of a depressing book in some ways because he finds no fulfillment in life, but it is a wonderful contrast to the life we can have with God.
