    Hi There!

Some of the homeschoolers at the new church I attend are really into Omnibus and the online class.  I once looked at Omnibus about a year ago and thought it was a bit too much for us.  My oldest is a daughter, which I am thankful for, because I don’t feel the pressure of her having to have a career (skills yes, but not necessarily a career).  She is a bright, sweet 13 yr old who loves to read and write.  Besides the fact that I have never spent that much money (as the online Omnibus class) on all 4 children for a full year of homeschooling, the curriculum just doesn’t seem like a fit.  It seems like it is something I would like to study, but not necessarily the direction I sense for her from the Lord.  But I thought I would ask some CMers if you all had looked at it and what you thought.

At our homeschooling convention last summer, my dh spent alot of time talking with David Quine (neat family).  He took a look at Quine’s Starting Points.  That also looks like a neat curriculum.  My dh would like to teach it to my daughter next year, but he’s praying that the Lord make some changes to his schedule because for the last 6-8 years he has had to travel ALOT.

So, if you’ve ever looked at Starting Points, I’d love your opinions.  I’d also covet your prayers for my dh’s work.  We are so thankful he has a job, but it has been so disruptive to establishing any semblance of routine, habits, or consistency.  To be able to see him, we often travel with him spending whole days in the car.  I’m tired.

I’m hoping for my youngest to be able to use the SCM modules and guides.  I’m actually looking forward to slowing down a bit, if the Lord wills, and focusing on my youngest’s learning.

Thanks for any reviews or thoughts,

    Betty

Sorry I was so wordy with my post.  Mostly I just want to know if anyone has physically looked through the book or program and what your thoughts were.  It is hard to make a judgement without actually holding a book in your hands, kwim?

Others may like it, but are they CMers at heart?  If they do, great!  But it makes a difference to me since I am more of a CMer than a Classical homeschooler.

    Many Thanks!

If you are a true CMer at heart then you will most likely not like Omnibus. If your idea of a great education is spending no less than 2 hours a day working on Omnibus, readings, and writing assignments then you may like it. But, I also feel that many of the books chosen for readings are very inappropriate for the age range this book is written towards.

    Hi, Betty –

I’m sorry I don’t have any experience or advice for you regarding either of the curriculums you mentioned, but just wanted to say hi.  I can understand your frustration regarding a normal schedule, etc.  I feel this way myself at times.  I think it’s wonderful that you feel it’s important enough to drive whole days to be with your dh.  That says a lot about your family.  🙂   At the same time, that could get very tiresome very quickly.  Praying that God gives you and your family wisdom to know how to handle this season of your life.  Prayer said for you & your family tonight.

I have no personal experience with either but I did read a review of Starting Points by Karen Andreola at CBD. Maybe her review will give you the CM perspective of the program you are hoping for?

Thanks for the info ladies.  It just sounds so “studious”, kwim?  But that doesn’t mean it’s what the Lord has for us.

I do appreciate the prayers.  My dh’s work just handed him a target list of doctors he’s supposed to visit and they are spread over 5 states.  He doesn’t think he’ll be hitting them all.  But the traveling really changes what you can get done as far as homeschooling.  It keeps me ever clinging to Christ for direction and help.  There’s a good chance I won’t be going to many of the trips.  We’re still praying to sort through it all.
