I came across these book titles and wondered if anyone has read any of them and, if so, what did you think?
The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship, A Russian Tale
The Case of the Phantom Frog
Hans Brinker
The Little Lame Prince
The Bronze Bow, by Speare
We have 3 boys 11, 7 and 4. I’m trying to build a library at home for our children and hopefully for the grandchildren someday Anyway, I don’t want to pass up a good find, but I also hate to have books looking at me and making me feel guilty that we haven’t had a chance to read them:) Any help would be appreciated:)
I’m not home right now to check, but I know I have The Fool of the World in my lending library. By Arthur Ransome, I believe?? I haven’t read it but he’s a very good author. Bronze Bow is superb as is Hans Brinker. I also have Little Lame Prince in my library, but haven’t read it either. I’m not familiar with the other one off the top of my head.
The fool is a favorite literary character in Russian literature — usually like a “holy fool” who would give up everything to follow Christ or a simple child or a good-hearted trickster — they all challenge people to look beyond outward appearances. I don’t know which version of The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship you have but coming from a Russian-American household I wouldn’t skip it. Enjoy it with your children now and they’ll even have a bit of a foundation for understanding Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov later
So, I went back to our Friends of the Library and picked up The Bronze Bow, Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates and The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship by Arthur Ransome. I spent .45 cents.
