  • I know the subject of ipads has come up a few times and I was reading some old threads trying to find some favorite apps that people have. (Although I don’t think I find the threads I was remembering from the past, so if anyone wants to throw out faves, feel free!)

So I have an opportunity to get an ipad, largely for educational purposes — as is so often the case with technology, you play that game… “Well, for just $50 more I could get this memory upgrade… well for just $100 more I could get this” and so on. Money is a consideration, but I also want to get something that will really meet the needs (can you calll them needs? you know what I mean). For example, I have an 8GB ipod that I’ve had for a few years, and I’m surprised how close I am with maxing out the memory. But I know part of that is that the interface with our computer is a bit laborious and I am not as good at utilizing that.

I would love to hear people’s thoughts on what ipad feels like it’s good without being overkill (ipad 2 which only comes with 16GB vs ipad/retina which has mulitiple memory options). Also, is 16GB really enough, or do you find yourself maxing out? I don’t fully know how we will utilize it, but it’s primary use is *supposed* be to educational, including multiple foreign languages. I mean apps don’t take up THAT much space, do they? I’m sure we’d do some photos, videos (which I expect would be the memory hogs), plus we are doing more and e-books (Heritage History, SCM e-books, YC, etc).

But I see this as the kind of thing that will get more and more use… and that I will want to take as my own when the kids aren’t using it. 😉

I have 16gb which I use for both homeschool AND my classroom. It’s enough. 16gb is a lot of storage. You are correct in suspecting that photos and movies take up lots of space. Next is music if you have a lot, then apps depending on how many you have. Ebooks take up hardly any space compared to the others. I have ipad 2 which is sufficient. Retina would be cool, but the only time I notice it is when we FaceTime family. Not a huge deal.

Thanks, Linda. Anyone else care to chime in? I know there are some iPad fans out there. 🙂 I was leaving toward the 32gb current model…until I realized that the $600 model is suddenly $800 by the time you add in the Apple Care plan, a case, and tax. Wow. Maybe a Square Trade warranty would be cheaper, idk.

I feel like I should followup question as to if the iPad has revolutionized your life and/or your kids’ homeschooling, lol. Feeling some fear here as I stand on the precipice and get ready to jump….
