any ideas?? What works best for you? Do you have a rotating schedule of different places and playthings/activities to play alone as well as with other children?
Blocks…shape sorter…board books….those big plastic beads that go together…stacking rings. Search for ‘baby toys’ on the internet and make a list that you can keep your eyes open for at garage sales or on ebay.
Make a little basket with her ‘stuff’ and let her grab things that interest her.
I think at the 1-2 yo age the main thing is that they are exploring the world around them and learning the interrelationnship of objects, textures, etc…Let her exlore and get plenty of sunshine and fresh air.
Lots of singing and music games – lots of talking to her and pointing things out. All of that builds literacy skills and the desire for story time and reading down the road.
It is a wonderful age, and I am sure many of us (including me!) would say that we miss having a little one at that age! Despite the challenges, it is just a beautiful thing to watch a baby waking up to the world around her. Enjoy it!
Rotating schedule, yeah, I feel the same!! But I know some do…and maybe I should consider it 🙂 I’m sorry, I should have been more specific…I’m thinking about things to keep him better occupied in the house while Im teach/read to bigger kids, make meals, etc. He’s just beginning to walk, but mostly a crawler yet, so everything still goes in the mouth. Loves to get at the matchbox cars, little tractors, legos – but all very hazardous! Just the other day he swallowed some unknown object that came out of the car tote (probably some broken off piece) – seems to be ok now…suppose it will show itself in the diaper soon . Loves books, occasionally appears to be catching on to how they work…but is still a major hazard to the books (tears the paper, eats the board ones), you know the way it is! Kitchen gadgets are good off and on – I should probably collect some more for him b/c I don’t have a great variety. I’m with you on the electronic noise-makers! We have one nice one and one not so nice one that he just got for his birthday (don’t know how long I’ll keep that one, and I’m not in the market for more)! Anyway, I love, love, love this stage! And in all likelihood he’s the last (I’m 41) and I’m thoroughly enjoying him as well as my other 5; but the fact remains that this is a tough stage to keep happily and safely occupied b/c he’s interested in EVERYTHING (except possibly for the basket of safe toys)!! So, thanks for the suggestions. More welcome 🙂 !!!
Here are things our toddlers enjoy (we have 20 month old twins in our home daycare right now) Some might not work for a few months if yours is younger, but keep the list for later!
Fingerpainting on the highchair tray with vanilla pudding coloured with food colouring (while the older children are painting or doing other crafts)
Playdough made from flour mixed with enough water to make a squishable dough. (while the older children play with regular play dough or clay
Pegboards (we have a few plastic ones where the pegs go in the board, but also stack into each other)
wooden puzzles
Little people play sets
A ball machine that blows the balls up through the tube, then they roll down a track to come up again. the balls are fun to roll around as well
Duplo (they don’t build with it yet, but they pack it around in bags a lot)
Wooden train sets
Dance to music (both children’s songs and from our composers)
String large beads on pipe cleaners.
Colouring with short pencil crayons (less likely to poke themselves). You can buy half size ones.
Stacking plastic cups, bowls, plates.
We use the highchairs or strategically placed baby gates to keep them in safe zones when we need to.
