Has anyone used this? I have 2 boys–almost 13 and 11. The 13 year old did AG for grammar last year and the 11 year old did Jr. AG. I didn’t care for it much (actually that would be an understatement), but we’ll probably finish it as I don’t really see any that look pleasant to me and we already own it….
I thought we’d take a year off from “grammar” and do some writing. I know that IEW is a great writing program, but this one looked fun. http://www.oneyearnovel.com/ It’s not cheap, but I could use it for both and I am saving on tons of books by using library and free kindle books (LOVE those!)
My daughter loved the one year novel course and wrote an outstanding book by the end of it – I was really impressed. She is the writer in the family and while she has been ill I wanted someting to distract her from her worries – well this really did the trick – she got into it straight away and lapped up all the lessons on DVD and in the book. She paced herself and it was something she could leave when she was really sick and go back to as soon as she as able – I just checked in on it and did the recommended things, but it was a big success. I highly recommend it. Linda
Wow! Great to hear. I didn’t see anything on the forum about it so I was a bit concerned. How old was she when she did it and was it intensive on your part or as easy as they say on the intro video–just reading over it and making comments about how it made you feel…?
We are doing a program this summer called the Junior Secret Noveling Club. It is free but her links to the pdf lessons don’t work anymore. We did the program last summer as well (kids begged to do it again, they loved it), and at that time I downloaded the full file of all the lessons, so I have the pdfs if anyone would like me to send them in an email. I have fulfilled her requirement for sharing the files, so it is all on the up and up.
We have done this with kids ages 9-11 but older kids could do it, not sure about any younger than that, except just to participate with a parent’s help. My 7yo participates orally sometimes, esp with the grammar exercises.
This is nothing as elaborate as the adventure novel program, but it is a great freebie.
Gem, thanks! I had NO idea it was on sale! Every little bit helps. It looks like they’re almost to the 15% off range. I’m going to have the boys look at it this morning and see what they’re thoughts are.
Charlene, Chloe was about 16 when she did it, and she is onto the second course now, doing it for fun. It was very easy for me, I just gave her the materials and let her run with it, and I just read and made the comments like they suggested. It was very freeing for her and gave her some independence, I did hold her to a schedule when she was well enough – but it is easy to pick up and put down. She rarely wanted to put it down, only if she was feeling really ill. So for the parent it is easy, for the child, it is fantastic, teaches them to be imaginitive, write well, and they end up with a book that they have written themselves. Linda
My oldest did OYAN last year. She learned A LOT. A large part of her learning actually came from her forum interaction – giving and receiving critiques, helping newbies, character lounge, etc. She made the semi-finalist list of the novel contest.
