There is a snake on my kitchen table.  That’s right.  A snake.  And not in a jar.  Just slithering on the table while all the kids sit round with their notebooks drawing what he looks like and how he slithers.  Obvioulsy, I was not asked to let him slither around!  But how could I say no when they all pull out their nature journals on their own?

And that right there is the only downside I’ve found to schooling Charlotte Mason style…

I think you’re doing something wrong.  We follow CM’s methods and I’ve never had a snake on our kitchen table.  😉

You are one brave mom!!  I think my DC would be copying the snake from a field guide.

I would love deer in our yard!  We just have birds, rabbits, and squirrels…and our dog.

We’re going to have some serious issues if I come in to find a deer on my kitchen table!

That’s awesome, Lora!  Though I am with Jenni – AK=no snakes or other scary reptiles.  I’m okay with that.  Can you post a picture of it?  🙂

Snakes are not my favorite, but I actually prefer them to deer.  I am always terrified that deer will attack me.  And I wanted to get a picture but the boys used up all my camera batteries making lego films earlier in the day!  🙁  It’s warm today in NY, so the snakes are starting to pop up again.  About a week ago we started hearing the tree frogs.  And while frogs and snakes aren’t my favorite, I love it because it means spring is finally here!  (Which I sing the same way the frog does in the “Lost in the Woods” movie – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qhv29_M-P5Q)

LOL  Oh, my, too funny!  My 8yo dd LOVES bugs, so the other day she caught a very large centipede and put it in a jar.  Then she taped up some sort of “amusement park” for it, and it promptly escaped.  To where, I do not know……  I’m just glad she didn’t keep it on the kitchen table….  Laughing

Ack!!  I would MUCH prefer snakes to centipedes or anyother type of bug, other than maybe caterpillars!

CR-A-CKing up! That is too funny, and I agree that you are one brave Mommy! We had our CM drawback moment this week when we sighted the first scorpion of the spring in our kitchen:

Mom: “Get me a shoe!! Kill it, kill it!!”

Kids: “Wait – let me see what the stinger looks like so I can draw it in my notebook!! Flip it over, are those scales??”

We have elk (the size of horses!), deer, foxes, rabbits and squirrels. There is an occasional bear, bobcat, or mountain lion so I can’t let my DC play outside alone. We have fun observing all the animals though!

I just blogged about this the other day:

Glad we don’t have snakes! Gives me the shivers just thinking of it!!

Oh, fun and delight!  We love snakes!  We have three, and they love to be paid attention to, so if anyone wants to visit/borrow/draw them, you know where I am!  Wink
