I just mentioned in my last post that my 16 year old is starting u.s. history credit, and I am not really pleased with how I have it planned.  She is reading “Lies my Teacher Told me”  and then ‘The Patriot’s History of the U.S. (or something like that)  The patriot’s history is like 900 pages long!!  I know she can handle it, she is smart and taking a class at community college.  But how much will she enjoy and remember?  isn’t there another way???  She would like to do American History in one year so she can take more classes at the community college next year.  SO  while I still have her, i would like to do some more “real” learning.

    Any suggestions?

Thank you all SO much for reading all my post/questions.  I know I have posted alot lately.  I am so grateful for the support here!!

I actually was considering switching to one of the SCM modules for this year. We have been studying history chronologically up to this point. After thinking about it for awhile, I decided to focus on American history this year and I decided to use an American history high school textbook that I have. It is very well written. I’ve read some textbooks and they can be pretty dry. This one is not like that. Also, my daughter likes books that are filled with various facts and information and she likes some textbooks. So I thought this might be a good fit for her. So what I decided to do was use this textbook but use it in more of a CM manner. Many textbooks have a lot of different sections in one chapter. So what we are doing is: (1) I have my daughter do a notes narration for each section of the assigned reading. Then I have her give me an oral narration after she finishes the assigned reading. Sometimes I might have her do a written narration. (2) I am adding in additional living books – like biographies for example. Also, I add in videos and documentaries to supplement.

Notgrass? I’ve only glanced at it, but it covers American History in one year I believe for high schoolers to work independently.

I’m curious, Mrs. K what book are you using?
