Old Homeschooler but new to CM

  • Well, where to start, we have been homeschooling now for eleven years.  We have done text books, a more classical approach, and unit studies. I have a 14dd left and 11dd left to teach, they are tired of the same old same old.  My oldest doesn’t feel like she is learning anything with unit studies, has often called it “baby school” while my 11dd suffers from dyslexia but loves to be read to and do short writing lessons that don’t wear her out as well as narrate in a variety of different ways.  I have looked at CM before but just was too overwhelmed.  This week, out of desperation I began looking again.  I found this site and may I say, I am so excited.  I love love love to read, love love love to have books all around me and I do feel like we are a good fit for SCM.

I will be, over the next few days, getting my feet wet and making my plans.  Right now I plan on starting next Monday transitioning, I thought we would start out with Bible, History(I think I am going to purchase Joshua through Malachi since we just completed a unit on Genesis and Egypt), and Narration.  After that I plan to follow the transition guide for each week.  I do have one question, I really would like to start Bible with Wisdom of Life; do you think it would be appropriate for my 11dd?  If not, what is another that some of you would recommend?

I look forward to getting to know everyone here and learning more about this method of learning.

    Blessings,

Welcome, Melissa! I’ve looked at Wisdom for Life, but have not used it. I’m sure someone here will give it a good review for your 11dd. Just wanted to say, ‘Hi!’

    Hello Melissa!

Welcome to SCM!  This is a wonderful and calming site!  We’ve been using CM for three years now and hsing for going on 7 years.  CM has been a blessing to our family, and this site has as well:)  My eldest who is 11 has said to me many times over the years, “Thank God for Charlotte Mason Mom!”.  Hope you feel at home here.

    In Christ, Bridget

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome.  JoJo, a special thanks for the info on Wisdom for Life, I think we will go for it.  I am wanting to do it with her so it should be a good fit.  The 11yo and I will be doing alot together at least this first year, she is a reluctant learner due to her dyslexia and needs to build up some confidence.

Thanks again, I am sure I will need lots more help before it is all done.

    Blessings,

    Melissa
