I had bought the 1st handbook last year but we wound up going a different route. I have planned on using it this year but not sure if I want/need to repurchase so I can get the NEW handbook. Curious what others have done/are doing?
Is there really that much difference?? Just wondering if it’s something I can adapt to fit the older version.
Replaced readings from Oxford book; used Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors instead
Changed geography lessons to use the Visits to Africa notebooks
Added The Stuff They Left Behind to corresponding lessons
Removed In the Days of Noah from grades 7–9
Removed Mara, Daughter of the Nile option from grades 7–12
Added Unwrapping the Pharaohs and Uarda for grades 10–12
Most of the Bible lessons are the same.
If you have the Oxford book, you can use it and the 2nd edition plans as they are. If you don’t have the Oxford book, you can use the 2nd edition lesson plans and substitute Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors in its place by following the suggestions on this Links and Tips page.
You can use the geography lessons are they are in the 2nd edition or do the Visits to Africa notebook instead. Just do one Visit each week instead of the geography lesson listed in the handbook.
Then if you want to add The Stuff They Left Behind, it pairs best with Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors and has a few items that would pair with Bible readings. You can look through the sheet that’s included in the portfolio and make a little note in your handbook to remind you when you want to display and discuss each artifact picture. Use them to introduce a lesson, expand on a lesson, or review a lesson before moving on to the next chapter. Your choice.
Does that help or just confuse the matter?
