Many of you here know of our eclectic family lifestyle:) 9 months in Canada on land, 3 in Alaska fishing for prawns/shrimp on a 50′ boat. Lots of travel, lots of craziness, lots of FUN! We are off again on the 22nd of September and won’t be back till mid to late November. I am not sure about internet access up there tho I have met some lovely ladies who homeschool so that is a bonus! And I hope to meet others too ( Hi Kalle!) Anyhow, it will be a tough transition time from our big house to our boat and my 14yo son really is resisting this year. he isn’t a fisherman at heart, and thats ok. My prayer is that he is a pleasant, cooperative part of our family, and chooses to be so when we are at sea. I really covet your prayers for our trip this time! Our family unit is much more important than money, smooth seas or anything else and I know the Lord has us in this adventure for a purpose, so I am praying my son will not be too difficult. Thanks so much for all your encouragement and prayers
Wow Heidi, that sounds like a real adventure, do you stay on the boat most of the time or how does that work? How does the homeschool work during those months at sea – it sounds fascinating and what an experience your children are having, I think it sounds hard work but enriching and wonderful. May God bless you all, as you go off again to do something most of us cannot even really imagine. We will certainly be praying for you, and for your son, so that he may adjust and find the adventure this time around – even if it is not really his thing. Linda
lol, no Rachel, not that far north, only to Ketchikan this time. My dh has fished the Bering Sea and doesn’t want to return there! We actually lost our 58′ boat in an ice storm in January in the Bering Sea and thankfully everyone was saved. Our old partner was skippering the boat and dh set to fly up and join him when it went down. Actually the best thing that could have happened to us as we were able to focus on home and family and sever a partnership that was not healthy. So (except for the debt) we are happier fishing the quiet waters and I know it is the best for our family. We usually all stay on the boat, there are bunks for the three kids and one for dh and myself. We head into town once a week or so for groceries, swim, shower etc but generally we are together on the boat, up long inlets. It is gorgeous, and very peaceful. When it blows, we tie up, no way dh will ever risk us over a days fishing, but that is rare where we fish. Last year I took way too many books, this year just taking my read alouds, the kids Lang. Lessons from Queen, their math review books, and sketch books and coloring pencils. there is so much to learn and see out there that school ‘books’ tend to get ignored:)
Yeah! You all are gearing up to come up here. I am uncertain of when we will be pasing through Ketchikan. My husband informed me that his job there may end sooner than he originally thought. When my brother-in-law found out that we were planning on to go to Juneau to have the baby he signed up for some more construtction jobs. So, we may end up there for a few months. Ketchikan itself has decent internet service, although I am uncertain of how accessible it is to those that do not have a plan. I believe that a coffee shop downtown touristship area has wireless internet as does the landing hotel. My brother told me that he used to park in thier parking lot now and then and use it. I am hoping that we can spend a couple days in Ketchikan before we head up to Juneau. My husband may not want to as he is spending entirely to much time there right now. We will be heading over sometime in October.
How exciting for your kids to go fishing with you all. Some of my fondest childhood memories are when I could travel on my dad’s tugboat. He used to tugboat log, but gave it up several years ago when it became harder and more expensive to get the timber. I was very sad when we sold the boat. I used to think that when I grew up maybe I would buy it back. Unfortunatly the family left it alone for a winter and it sunk.
