We will spend this entire year working on obiedence.  It needs to be ingrained and it’s got to be instilled in every aspect of our days.  Our bible verse’s are all going to be on obedience (one a week so 36 weeks of them), our character will be on obedience.  Everything.  So the question is I need some great books (audio/book) to read for family time or in the car this year that deals with obedience.  I have a wide age so 4-16yrs and will mix it up.  So feel free to suggest preschool age books all the way up to high school!  I’m listening…

THis isn’t a book but I remember there being a chapter in Little House and the Big woods, when Pa is making bullets and Laura touches a hot one even though she knew she was not supposed to.  It is a good example of how disobedience has consequesnces.

Most books talk about more than just obedience. I am reading some different ones to my 11yo daughter this year, but they are books for girls, so they may not work for you since it sounds like you want to read as a family. I’ll give you the titles anyway. They are not strictly on obedience, but obedience is the base for all other character traits. They both deal with obedience in the beginning of the books. Beautiful Girlhood by Karen Andreola and Dear Princess by Mary M. Landis (Rod & Staff). One that would work for the whole family is Hands-On Character Building by Rick and Marilyn Boyer. I used to have it and now wish I would have kept it. They use games and such to teach and ingrain. For Instruction in Righteousness would be a good resource for Bible verses. A book that is good for parents to read is Do You Mind if Your Kids Don’t by Bill Rice III. HTH

I have been wanting to line up my Doorposts materials,

For Instruction and Training In Righteousness (LOOK AT THIS BOOK)
It takes sin ares and gives oodles of verses stating the postitive, oodles of verses for the negative (disobedience). Also, there are stories where obedience and disobedience is played out.  (this book has many many sin issues discussed. It is a large book, but a huge reference!)

I’m getting excited even thinking about lining up these books with habit training!  🙂

Oh yes, I don’t mean the entire book is all about obedience.  Just that it is very much woven through out the book.  Clarifying

    Thanks ladies!

A biography on Louis Braille might be good. He was messing with his fathers tools that he wasn’t supposed to touch. He hurt himself with the tools and that’s what blinded him

We have been using the Kids of Integrity character development with my almost 4 yr old – best thing is it is free! They have a lot of great ideas for obedience, tons of relevant Bible verses and stories in the Bible, so you might be able to use some of the resources with your younger ones (maybe even the older too!). I have heard of a book – I think it is called Storytime with the Millers or something along those lines that has stories about obedience. Also the Children’s Book of Virtues is great for various character qualities and you might be able to stretch some of them to work for obedience too!

I was going to suggest the Little House story when Ma goes to Suki, the cow, and tells Laura to return to the house and instead of asking why she was obedient and later found out it wasn’t Suki that her mom slapped on the bum, it was a bear.  So when my kids ask me Why I’ll make a comment like ‘The bear is going to eat you!’.  Anyway, I don’t remember exactly what book it was in but an early one.  I think the whole series would be good to read and focus on the issues of obedience.  Remember when Pa said to not jump in the hay pile and the girls did but reasoned a way to say they weren’t?  Much in the early books to mine on the topic of obedience.
