Hi,
I got an iphone 4s to go with my ipad 3 (thank you to those who recommended the iphone as I LOVE how the two work together). Being new to this technology it has helped a TON to have the two similar things!
What are some good educational apps for 5, 7, 9 and 12 year olds?
Any good apps for the kitchen, healthy eating on a budget, large family eating on a budget etc.
Any other must have apps?

I am always recommending this app to people – Apps Gone Free. It tells you each day about paid apps that are on free promotion – today I downloaded Audubon field guide to north american owls – free! You will find a lot of photography apps and games but also educational apps, productivity apps – it is fun to see each day what is available!

I don’t have any purely educational apps. But we do have a lot of nature apps, including a number of Audobon ones. It is really handy to have all that info in my hpone for nature walks rather than needing to carry multiple nature guides. One I paid for is iBird because my dd loves birds and it is very searchable. My kids will just sit and look through it even if there are no birds around to see. My dd also uses the Lion Brand knitting app to look through knit and crochet patterns. They only other thing they do on my phone is angry birds 🙂 It is educational, if they ever need to through rocks at piggies hiding in stacks of bricks.

We use our iPad and iPod Touch alot for learning as well as for fun, especially when we travel.
Learning Apps: iBooks, Google Earth, Pages, WordWeb (Dictionary), RhymeFree, Starfall ABCs, Math Drills, Montessori Crosswords (spelling), Bible.is, Reading Eggs – Eggy Alphabet (might only be in Australia?), Hebrew in a Month (lots of other languages available too), iAlephbet, YouTube

Fun Apps: Sudoku Tablet, Logic Games, Scrabble, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Flow Free, Tangrams, Unblock Me, Doodle Buddy, Virtuoso, Magic Piano
“other” Apps: BigOven (recipes), Chore Pad HD, Pinterest, Skype, Facebook, Cozi
These are Apps we use regularly. Others come and go after we use them for a while or the kids out-grow them.
I also use the iPad to check and write emails, read the news, listen to audio books and music.
So, that gives you an idea of how we use our “devices” 🙂
I hope others make suggestions too.

Oh I just remembered a cool one that I have been meaning to post on SCM – Poems By Heart by Penguin Classics
It is an app that helps you learn and recite poetry! It is free but after you memorize all the free poems you have to pay to get more… I have enjoyed learning the first poem but I haven’t tried it on my kids yet :p

If you are on Facebook I would suggest liking the Apps for Homeschooling page. They find the best deals and really great apps. Within the last few days I downloaded the Wordly Wise 3000 app on sale for .99 and the How it Works, Machines app for .99. The How it Works one is awesome! You put together machines like cars, cameras, etc. like a puzzle so your kids can see exactly how they work.
